I felt the fear of losing someone. The fear of never having thatonemore second. The terror of being all alone—again.

If I’d found a splinter of glee in this cruel, and callous reality, I couldn’t abandon it. I had to pick it, even if it meant it was from one of the heartless men that ruled it.

“Any luck?” Davina’s marron eyes glanced behind me before they bounced back to my eyes. A small smile played over her features when she realized the owner had left me on my own.

She wasn’t a fan of strangers, and that made two of us. But her timid smile hid too many questions.

“I think so.” I offered her a smile.

I found the dress moments after Lucca had left me high in release, surrounded by various dresses that hung around it. Somehow, before I gave up the search, my eyes had narrowed to it. It’d fit my exact physique, and it didn’t matter if I had to fight the skirt to search for my blade. I knew nothing would come close to its elegant bodice.

It was the dress I would be marrying Lucca in. It was the dress he would tear me free of on our wedding night. So instead of walking out in it, I left it behind only to be seen again on that one day.

“I can’t wait to see you in it. I have no doubt it’s beautiful,” she added.

“Thank you,” I said, and scanned the empty room. “Where is Viktor?”

Her face lit up, and her body bounced, turning and motioning for me to follow.

“Ilias arrived just as Lucca was leaving.” Her smile returned with a snicker. I watched her closely, and while only half of her face was visible, I could see she knew something I didn’t.

“What is it?” I asked, and slowed my pace.

Her black shoulder length hair swayed as she shook her head as if it wasn’t anything important but answered. “Ilias likes to tease and push Lucca a bit too much for pure enjoyment.”

She stopped before we could walk out to the main floor and continued, “Even Arlo does when they are not all…” She searched for the right word.

Brutal? Cold hearted? Assholes?

Hell, take a pick.

“Scary.”

I laughed.

“Sure, scary.” I chuckled, and her smile widened. “And what was he teased for again?”

Her face tinted a faint rose, and the color traveled down to her neck.

“Well, Arlo had said, and I quote,I can only think of one reason we are late to our own flight.”

“And Ilias?” I questioned.

Her eyes lowered. “That by his rumpled shirt, and messy hair he could nameit.”

What an odd interaction. They joked with him.

“What was Lucca’s response?”

Davina’s head tilted in my direction and shrugged. “The only way he does. With threats, sneers, and a few choice of words.”

NowthatI could see, I smiled.

We both stepped into the open entry and two sets of striking blue eyes shot in our direction.

“Thank fuck, I’m starving,” Ilias announced, and his gaze fell onto Davina. She walked away from me to meet his outstretched arm, and once she was tucked inside, his eyes lifted. “Good to see you again, I’ll be joining you guys for the rest of the evening.”

I gave him a nod and turned to Viktor’s scrutinizing gaze.
