The corner of his mouth curled, amused. And yet his features sombered, causing me to panic inside for the thoughts that changed his demeanor.

“I’m not intimidated.” His eyes fell to my lips before he continued. “If anything, I’m impressed.”

He was?

“I actually want to see this folder you’ve put together.”

Or did he doubt me?

If that was the case, bring it on.

“Okay.” With a smirk, I turned.

“Wait.”

I stopped, faced him and the towel stretched out for me to take.

With a smile, I continued walking as I said, “I’m all dried now.” I made my way inside knowing each step I took his eyes would take the movement of my ass.

Payback was exhilarating, and I wasn’t done with it or with him just yet.

LUCCA

I should’ve lookedinto her. Dug deep into her past to uncover all her secrets. That was what I did for anyone who entered my life. It gave me leverage, power over them. But I hadn’t.

Katia wanted to work, and even if I didn’t see anything wrong with the idea of my future wife working, I struggled with the idea of her roaming the streets with a target on her head. I’ve kept the severity of the threats that stalked Miami, and even New York, from her. It wasn’t a topic to be discussed with a woman, but Katia was different and I’ve stowed away the dangers for far too long.

An architect.

I smiled. Jesus, this woman was beautyandbrains.

But why?

Most people worked for money. Was that what she needed? All she had to do was ask. I had more than what I knew to do with it. But Katia wasn’t one to ask, and I hadn’t offered. A mistake on my part since I had a credit card in my desk drawer specifically for her that I hadn’t given her. It had slipped my mind, and now I was facing the consequences.

I knew what the answer had to be.

Nothing inside her folder could change the outcome, but I had to come up with a strategy, a smart way for her to understand that the answer revolved around safety and nothing else. That was why I asked for it, to have a minute to think through it without her skin and toned golden body distracting me.

It was cruel for me to give her a sense of hope after losing control yesterday. After I broke my vow to never leave a mark on her body. And I restrained myself from checking her wrist after seeing how her body failed to pull her out of the water, afraid and unsure how I would react or what it would spark.

Katia hadn’t mentioned it, and neither had I.

Was I even able to apologize?

No, I wasn’t, but I had to acknowledge what had happened.

Was I sorry?

Yes. No! Fuck, this was new territory, mined and uncharted. But what I did know was that the sound of her cry from pain and the detest and agony piercing through her eyes wasn’t something I liked.

Two knocks interrupted my thoughts, pulling me back as the door to my study opened. Katia’s fuck-me black heels stepped inside with aclick-clackcadence that proclaimed power and determination. An attractive sight to see. After a quick glance down her long legs that were exposed in a deep maroon dress that hugged her body, my eyes were captivated by her emerald greens. They were ready to debate and win.

Katia was ready to fight, looking like a businesswoman. The kind that turned heads and demanded attention in any room she walked into. A fucking delicious dream of confidence.

She sat across my desk, keeping her eyes from drifting away from mine. Her spit-fire spirit hardened my dick that hid under the desktop.

“Before you start.” I cleared my throat, opened the drawer to my left, and placed the black plastic card in front of her.
