She tries to slam the door shut on me. I stick my foot in the way and hold it open.

“For fuck’s sake, Aurora. Stop acting like a child and get changed.”

“What the hell did you expect?”

She’s making this hard, but I’ll have her in line soon enough.

“If we don’t sell this, Da will kill you and the rest of your family.”

Aurora gasps. Her eyes go wide as saucers. Scaring her doesn’t feel good, but she needs to be afraid. Needs to understand the stakes.

“Now I really don’t want to have dinner with them,” Aurora says.

I crack a smile. “He’ll try. I’ll have to kill him first, then Killian will try to murder me. It’s a whole messy affair, so what do you say we just avoid it?”

“Oh my god. What have you dragged me into?”

I growl. I’m fast losing patience with Aurora. As Billy’s daughter, this should be par for the course with her. “Just change into something nice and stay close.”

Aurora crosses her arms. She looks mutinous, but I know she isn’t stupid enough to pull anything tonight. If Aurora screws me over, she’ll do it when she isn’t outnumbered.

“Fine.”

I smirk. “They’ll be here in an hour.”

“I’m doing the bare minimum,” Aurora shrieks and slams the door on my face. This time I allow it.

If it had been anyone else to say I’d be furious would be an understatement. Coming from Aurora? It’s downright adorable.

Laughing, I walk away. I try to remember the last time I laughed for real and come up short. As dangerous as the game I’m playing is, it might just be worth the risk.

Chapter 10

Aurora

I glare at my reflection. My long dark hair ended up in more of a messy beach style than I planned, but fortunately, Caine’s men threw in my favorite black dress and black strappy heels when they ransacked my room. One last glance at my reflection in the mirror tells me I haven’t done badly for only having an hour.

Now if only I could do something about the churning in my stomach. Dangerous men have never made me uncomfortable. Most of the men I’ve known have been involved in the Dullahans, and objectively, I’m one of them. I guess I haven’t considered them ‘protection,’ because I never felt like I needed it.

But here?

Here I have no such security.

I go to find Caine only to realize I have no idea where he is. His absurdly giant house doesn’t exactly help me narrow the search. I suppose I can check his room, but there is no way I’m doing that.

“Caine?” I call out.

“In the study, sweetheart.”

“I’m not your sweetheart!” I shout as anger blooms in my chest.

I hear his laugh.

Tracking down the study, I find Caine sitting at his desk with a tumbler of whiskey.

“You look stunning,” he says, devouring me with his eyes.

I roll my eyes even as heat creeps up my cheeks. My body’s reaction to him leaves me twisted into knots. He might make me tremble with desire, but I will not succumb to anything as base as lust. “Thanks. There’s nothing I like more than a man rating my outfit.”
