Caine doesn’t look at him. “We’ve got history, so I’m going to make it simple, marry me. The Dullahans will work for my family and I won’t kill any of them. At least not tonight. Instead, I’m giving you one week to turn over the man who killed my cousin, Jack.”

I suck in a breath.

Chapter 6

Aurora

A faint buzzing noise fills my ears. Dimly, it registers that dad and Liam are shouting themselves hoarse. The other bikers are swearing and threatening Caine. I didn’t expect it, but maybe I should have. After all, they have known me since I was a child.

Caine picks up my hand. He gives it a light squeeze.

I snatch my hand back and barely restrain myself from slapping him. “Don’t touch me, asshole,” I hiss.

His men chuckle. “Feisty,” one of them comments.

I keep my focus on Caine. He’s their leader, and I want to see how he handles it. Caine breaks eye contact to silence his man with a glare. “As I was saying, it’s your choice.”

I glower at him. “Quite a choice. Either marry the man who threatened to murder me and my entire family, or watch your men kill them before you kill me, too.” There’s no mistaking the venom in my voice.

“You’ll leave here unharmed and untouched if you refuse, though I can’t say the same for your father and his men. What’s it going to be, lass? Time is running out, as is my patience,” Caine warns.

I exhale. Hard. My heart is pounding in my chest, threatening to explode or give out. Either option seems likely. “Does it matter what I say? Even if I agree, the MC never will.”

“The Dullahans will do what I fucking ask or I kill every one of them.”

I look at dad first. Caine is right. He’ll fall in line if it means protecting me and the Dullahans. Then I look at Liam. We might not have as much in common as when we were younger, but he is still my brother. When we don’t know what to do, we lean on each other. I search his face until I find the answer.

It’sonlytemporary, Liam’s expression seems to say.

The other Dullahans look like they’re considering the offer. Why wouldn’t they? None of them want to die chained to a chair. They dream of going out in a blaze of glory. Idiots that they are.

I turn back to Caine. “I accept your ludicrous proposal. Under the condition that no harm comes to my family or the club.”

“Agreed. No harm will come to the Dullahans as long as they play by the fucking rules,” Caine says. “Pack your things.”

I flinch.

He jerks his head and two of the men follow me to my room.

This second bedroom has been meticulously crafted as a sanctuary. The makeup vanity is littered with products and jewelry. The tallest of the men sweeps his arm along the vanity and drops everything into a bag.

The colorful throw pillows in the window beckon to me to curl up with a book. The rail-thin guard looks over the books and tosses them to the floor.

Photographs of my friends and my mother line the walls. My favorite one of her is placed on the nightstand. She was eighteen when it was taken on a sunny day, and the light makes her red brown hair shine like copper.

I miss her.

I pull a suitcase out of my closet and open it on the bed.

The tall guard knocks aside high school photos as he shoves makeup into the suitcase. I try to keep it together and I succeed until the framed photograph of my mom is knocked to the floor in the chaos.

“No, stop it! You’re trashing my room, you goons!”

They glance at me and go right back to what they were doing.

“Stop it!” I cry.

Caine appears in the doorway. His blue eyes flash with anger.
