“I don’t know.” She waved me off like I was the ridiculous one. “That’s not the point. Tell me everything. I heard that Liam threatened to burn the restaurant to the ground and Tony said he’d kill him if he tried.”

“I’m really starting to worry about this town.” I shook my head.

The game of telephone was no joke. This was the perfect example of how twisted the truth became when too many people started telling it.

“So, it’s not true then?” She sounded so disappointed.

“Not what you heard.”

Elise walked to my couch and plopped down on it. “That’s too bad. Greg and I would pay a lot of money to see Tony put Liam in his place. We talked about it all night.”

My words must have taken a moment to hit her, or to actually set in.

She leaned forward and tilted her head at me. “Wait a second. Rewind. Not what I heard? What did happen then?”

I filled her in on what had really happened at the restaurant—how Tony and Liam had known each other previously and the things that they had said for everyone to overhear.

“You’re leaving something out. I can see it all over your face.” She pointed a finger at me and moved it in the air. “Plus, you’re a terrible liar.”

She wasn’t wrong. I was a terrible liar, but I hadn’t lied yet.

A crazed sound escaped Elise’s lips. “You hooked up with him, didn’t you?”

“How did you—” I stopped short before thinking that pregnancy brain must have turned my best friend into a magic little witch.

Her jaw went slack. “Tell me right now.”

There was no point in denying it.

“He kissed me, told me he shouldn’t have done that, and then asked me to leave.”

“He what?” She shook her head, like it was all too much to comprehend at once. “Start from the beginning and tell me everything. It’s the only way we’ll figure out his stupid man brain.”

So, I did. And when I finished my version of events, she stood up and placed her hand on her stomach and gave me a knowing look.

“He’ll come around.”

“That’s it? That’s your advice? He’ll come around?” I wasn’t sure why I was so annoyed, but her words felt less than a little helpful.

“He freaked out.” She gave me a nonchalant shrug. “He’ll get over it. He likes you. I give him two days, max.”

“Two days, max, before what?”

“Before he shows up here and finishes what he started.”

That made my heart leap inside my chest and a smile skirt across my lips.

“I really hope you’re right.”

“Don’t worry; I am.”

“Is this your pregnancy superpower? You just suddenly know things?” I asked because Elise hadn’t had this ability before.

She was as clueless as I was, constantly struggling to read the signs and hints that guys threw our way.

“Yes,” she said without hesitation.

I had no idea if she was messing with me or not, but her confidence made me believe her.
