Unsure of what she meant by stay, I said nothing. I wrapped my arms around her and pulled her against me, holding her.

“Did you hear me?”

“Yes, you want to stay.”

She looked up at me. “Yes, I want to stay with you. If you’ll still have me?”

I placed my finger under her chin and tilted her head back, slowly bringing my mouth to hers. Kissing her gently at first, my tongue parted her lips and swept through her mouth. The longer we kissed, the more frantic it became, and soon we parted, breathless. “I’ll have you.” I winked. “I can’t wait, but only when you’re ready. So, however long it takes. I’ll be here, waiting. I’m not going anywhere.”

PEGGY

I shoved the picnic basket into the back of the truck, followed by the small picnic blanket I’d brought. Ethan closed the small hibachi we’d brought with us and carried it over to the back of the truck, sliding it in, then closing up the tailgate.

“Lunch was amazing. A suitable reward after a hard morning of car shopping,” he said, pulling me in for a kiss. “I don’t think I’ll ever tire of your kebabs.” He brought both his hands up to my breasts, cupping them in his hands.

“Oh my god. Ethan!” I squealed, pushing his hands away. “We’re in the middle of a park, with kids around,” I whispered.

“I meant your shish kebabs. You dirty girl,” he said, kissing my neck again, embracing me. “So, what if someone sees us? They’ll just think we are in love, which we are.”

I allowed myself to relax against his body as he claimed my mouth.

“Thanks for helping me get that car,” I said, smiling at him as I slipped from his embrace. “I love it. Best part, there will be more than enough room to deliver flowers from it. Plus, you got me an excellent deal. So, how could I not reward you with your favourite meal?”

Ethan chuckled. “I can think of one other meal I prefer, and perhaps I’ll help myself to that tonight,” he said, gripping my ass as he kissed his way down my neck to my shoulder.

“You’re so bad,” I said, my cheeks heating at his suggestion.

“Yeah, that may be, but last I recall, you love it. Plus, you’re just as bad.”

We’d driven out the Cedar Landing to find a new car for me. The other couldn’t be repaired after the accident. Too much damage had been done. I had no choice but to get something new. “You ready to make our way back?”

“Yeah, but I was wondering, could we stop somewhere on our way?”

“Of course,” Ethan said, helping me get into the front of the truck. “Where to?” he asked, hopping into the driver’s seat.

I gave him directions as we drove, and soon we’d pulled up alongside the river at the small cemetery in Cedar Landing.

“I hope this is okay, but I wanted you to meet Darren,” I said quietly, opening the passenger-side door. When Ethan didn’t move, I looked over at him. “This is important to me.”

Ethan met my eyes and then cut the engine of his truck and climbed out. I hoped this wouldn’t make him too uncomfortable. I was uncomfortable enough for the pair of us. He came around the front of the truck and took my hand in his.

“You okay with this?” I questioned, looking into his eyes.

“Of course,” he said, wrapping his arm around me as we made our way over to Darren’s grave.

Once there, I knelt on the ground, cleaning up the tiny flower bed I’d made. Once it was back to my standards, I stood up and went over beside Ethan, who wrapped his arm around me in a protective embrace.

“You chose a pleasant spot for him,” he said, looking out over the water.

“Yeah, he loved to be on the water, fishing, swimming, boating. I figured it was the best spot.” I softly smiled. “Something you both have in common.”

“I couldn’t agree more,” he said, pulling me against him.

We grew quiet as we stood there. I turned to him, placing my cheek against his chest. “Do you think you could give me a few minutes?” I questioned. “I want to say good-bye.”

“Of course, I can, but, baby, you don’t need to say good-bye. He’s a part of your life…”

“I do,” I said. “A part of me just needs to say it.”
