“Good evening!” Cameron ripped me out of my reverie.

“Heyyy. How are you?”

“Good,” he leaned closer, eagerly, “but the question is, how areyou?”

“Much better now, thank you.” I braced myself, knowing what was coming. Before the show, I’d given permission to leave no topic off the table. It was a dangerous permission, but one that needed to be done. It was important for healing. “I have to apologize for the last time I was here. I wasn’t myself.”

The audience cheered. I clutched my hands together again, bowing toward them in adoration. My eyes quickly darted to Amber, who was watching with a proud smile.

Cameron grinned. “We all have bad days. I’m just glad you’re okay.”

“I am. Thank you.”

Looking out toward the crowd, he wiggled his eyebrows. “Would that be because you and your girlfriend got back together?”

My eyes darted toward Amber once again. “Yeah, you could say that.”

The entire room gasped, followed by applause and cheering. That’ll surely make headlines by morning. After questioning me more about Amber, my upcoming projects, and playing a game with the host and another guest, my appearance was finished. I’d been so distracted by the text, I hoped I answered questions properly. Bad press wasn’t something I needed again. I also hadn’t gotten the opportunity to text Ian during a commercial. I was relieved when I stepped behind the curtain. Turning to one of the staff members, I pointed.

“Please go get my guest and bring her to me in the green room,” I tried to speak as quietly and calmly as I could muster.

Confused, the man sped away. I hurried to the room, pacing before Amber appeared in the doorway. I spun around to see her face frozen in terror, holding her phone.

“You too?”

She nodded.

“We have to go.” I gathered my things before speeding to the hallway.

An older lady with headphones and a clipboard approached us rapidly. “Mr. Hardwin, the interview scheduled for Entertainm—”

“Cancel it.” I turned to her, staring into her horrified gaze. “I’m not trying to be rude, sorry. My girlfriend isn’t feeling well.” I didn’t want to leak our engagement before we told our family and friends. “I’ll have my agent reschedule.”

On cue, Amber pitifully coughed, bobbing her head. Widening my eyes, I glared at her, half-amused at her poor attempt to convince someone she was sick. The lady bowed her head.

“So sorry, I hope you feel better. I will go let them know.”

“Thank you.”

We sped out the back door, where Tom was waiting inside the limo, not expecting us to exit so soon. I’d asked him to drive for the day. He was scarfing down a sandwich when I knocked on his window. Mouth wide open, he jumped, dropping it, tomatoes and shredded lettuce tumbling into his lap. He rolled down the window.

“Unlock the door.”

He scurried to clean his mess. “Sorry, I—”

“It’s okay. I can open a fucking door. Just unlock it, please.”

Amber opened the door, ducking into the limo before I could get to it first. I followed, slamming it behind us. Lowering the privacy glass, I craned my neck, seeing Tom shoving his unfinished food into the passenger seat.

“Take us to the house!”

Raising the partition, I draped my arm around her, holding her. She laid her head on me, digging her phone out of her bag.

“What does it say?” I sighed, bracing myself for the worst.

She opened the text, facing her screen toward me.

I wonder, Will your boyfriend choose to save you or Jenna?
