“I had to hide it on the way here because of us possibly being followed.” I rolled my eyes.

“They’ll figure it out.” Suddenly, her expression grew cold. She stared blankly at the wall. “They handled it once before. They’ll end it this time for sure.”

“I’m ready to live my life without looking over my shoulder all the time. I know I’ll always have to in a way because of Chance, and being friends with Ian, but I’d at least feel a bit safer if Alejandro was gone for good.”

“I know.” She nodded as she settled Kira in her crib. Gazing down, she took a deep breath. “I hope my brother gets to meet his niece.”

Springing to my feet, I grabbed her, yanking her into a tight hug.

“Let’s go to my room.”

She pulled away, guiding us down the hall into the master bedroom. The moment the door clicked closed, she crumbled to her knees, sobbing uncontrollably. I fell next to her, grabbing her. I held her tightly as she sobbed into my shoulder.

“Oh, God!” she wept. “I haven’t been able to cry about it recently because I didn’t want to stress Ian out more and I don’t want to upset my kids. I’m so pissed and hurt! I don’t want my brother to die because I love him so much,” she wailed louder. “He doesn’t deserve this. He’s done nothing but protect me since our parents died. Now, he’s finally happy with his wife and kids. They deserve him. He deserves them. I deserve him. He’s all I have left for family.” Leaning back on her knees, she buried her face in her palms. “Chance has always been like a brother to me, but he’s not my blood.”

“Blood doesn’t make people family.” I rubbed her back in a circle. “Chance is your brother, no matter what. I know it doesn’t help right now, but he’ll always be there to protect you no matter what, you can’t think this way about Ty right now.” I sighed. “I mean, your feelings are valid, of course, and you have every right to be upset and cry. It’s healthy. What isn’t healthy is speaking about him like he’s got no hope of making it.”

“His condition hasn’t changed.” She pressed her shirt sleeves into her eyes, wiping her tears. “The doctor isn’t giving us much hope.”

“Well, then Ty needs you to give him hope now, more than ever.”

“You’re right.” She bowed her head. “So, what do you suggest? I need a distraction.”

“I’ll think of something fun.”

“You look so sleepy.”

“I am sleepy.” The thought alone made me yawn.

KNOCK! KNOCK!

“Come in.”

We stood simultaneously, turning toward the door. Chance peeked his head in with Ian behind him.

“Chance Hardwin, congratulations!” Jenna sniffled, wiping away any trace of tears quickly. It couldn’t have come at a better time for her, or for us.

Ian’s eyes widened, darting around to the three of us. “Wait, what?!” He probably assumed her tears were happy tears.

Throwing my hand out in front of me, I displayed the large ring with a grin.

“You finally read your note.” He smirked.

Chance rolled his eyes, shrugging, pulling me into his body. “I planned to for a while, but—”

“You suck.” Ian chuckled.

“Well, let’s get through this shit, then I can marry her fine ass.” Chance pecked my cheek.

“We will.” Ian nodded. “Then you can win… what was it?” He chortled. “Another Oscar.”

Chance held his middle finger in the air as he led me out of the room. “We’ll see ourselves out tonight. Later bitches.”
