Ian cocked his head. “Discuss what?”

It was almost painful to watch. Jenna and I darted our eyes back and forth, watching the tennis match of words between them.

“Jade’s going to kill me, but we’ve been seeing each other since just after Christmas.”

“Holy shit.” Ian choked. “Five months?!”

“Almost six now, yes.”

“Wow, I’m a bit shocked, but I shouldn't be, I guess. You guys are always hanging on each other. I thought you were just good friends like Jenna and Chance.” His eyes were wide, as if he was still having a hard time processing. “Bring Madison, it’s fine.”

“I’ll tell Jade to come over after the party.”

CHANCE

“I thought we’d be talking at your house?” I leaned up between the seats of Ian’s Range Rover.

Luke glanced back over his shoulder from the passenger seat. “Ian’s house could be bugged. I told the girls not to discuss anything important while we were gone.”

“I don’t know who the fuck could have, or evenwouldhave, bugged my house.” Ian kept his focus on the road.

“Where are we going?” Tyler asked from the seat next to me.

“Since they stole the warehouse paperwork, I want to go there first and see if I can find anything.”

“Is that really safe?” Tyler asked. “Shit, what if the cops are there waiting for us?”

“I’ll scope it out before I pull in,” Ian assured him, “and if I have to, I’ll call Jake.”

As we neared the old Fitzgerald Tobacco Company warehouse, Ian slowed down. Luke, Tyler, and I watched out the windows for any sign of trouble. The area was deserted and seemed rather peaceful. Ian pulled into the lot, parking around the back of the neighboring warehouse instead of inside through the garage door.

We exited the car, walking around to the side of the building. Luke cocked his head, stepping over toward the entrance. Without a word, he yanked a piece of paper off the metal door. Turning around, he slid his phone out of his pocket, turning the flashlight on. We all leaned closer.

“What the fuck?” Ian hissed.

“We’re accountable for the sins we commit. Beware of shadows in daylight,” Luke read in a hushed tone while we all looked on.

“What the fuck does that mean?” Ian lit a cigarette.

The night suddenly felt a bit colder. I peered around the parking lot, watching for any sign of movement in the distance. I felt like we were being watched. Nudging Tyler, I arched my brow. He agreed quietly.

“Hey guys, I feel like we’re sitting ducks out here,” Tyler said barely above a whisper. “Ian, you and Chance have no security and whoever took the file has to know we’re here now.”

“Ian. We. Need. To. Go. Now,” Luke muttered.

Ian got ready to turn around, but Luke reached out, poking him hard in the stomach. He whipped back around, glaring.

“Guys, slowly get in the car.” Luke uttered again, barely above a murmur. “Act casual. Ian, I’m driving.”

Ian dropped his cigarette to the ground and not a single word was said as we slipped back into the SUV. Luke pulled out of the parking lot sluggishly. I glanced back to see three unidentifiable men, now standing by the warehouse door, wearing hoodies.

“There’s some guys at the door,” I murmured.

“I know.” Luke replied. “I saw one of them over Ian’s shoulder hiding against some pallets outside the building by one of the cargo containers.”

“Bro.” I snorted, reaching up to the passenger seat, slapping Ian’s shoulder. “You have some wicked bad luck with warehouses.”
