“Be right up.”

Okay, my first time ordering alcohol on my own and I think I passed. Lucas probably could have been helpful, although he doesn’t like alcohol that much, so this is just confusing to me.

“Hey there.”

One of the college boys leans against the bar to my right. Even if he wasn’t wearing a sweatshirt with some grouping of Greek letters that I do not know, I would know he was the fraternity type. He is his hometown’s Lucas Kennedy. It’s painfully obvious because he is stupid pretty and that confidence leaks out of him.

“Hi.” I look toward the entrance, but Lucas isn’t here yet.

“I’m Zane.” Yep. Charming smile and everything. It’s not Zane. It’s Lucas Kennedy number two. He’s just as friendly while he probably waits to order his own drink. “What’s your name?”

“Allie.” Well, he’s got one thing going for him that Lucas didn’t. He asked my freaking name.

“Can I buy you a drink?”

“Umm...” The bartender sets a glass down in front of me. “Thanks, I’m covered.”

Zane chuckles. “Long Island, huh? My mom likes those.”

Did the bartender give me an old woman’s drink? Is that what this is? He’s making fun of me?

“I’ll have one too, Ben,” Zane says to the bartender. “I haven’t had one of those in a while.”

I take my first sip. It’s a little strong, but I could see ordering a few of these before we leave.

“Are you from around here, Allie?”

“No,” I say. When I look over, Zane is staring at my legs, and I almost want to hide them. “Is there something wrong?”

His eyes snap up to mine. “No, sorry, just...” He licks his lower lip and watches me. “My friends didn’t think I had the balls to talk to you. Whoever actually approaches you gets free drinks for the night.”

I don’t get it.

Zane leans closer to me. It’s not threatening, but I need to make some space. “Are you with someone? We could get out of here if you wanted.”

Oh, frick. Does he not see the shiny rings on my finger? “Actually, I’m—”

“What’s up, bro?” Lucas’s hand comes down on Zane’s shoulder before he drops a possessive arm around me. “You met my wife?”

Zane’s face falls. “Your wife,” he nods slowly while his eyes flip between Lucas and me. “Got it. Nice to meet you, Allie. Have a good night, you two.”

Lucas watches Zane walk back to his table before he turns back around to face me. “I leave you for five minutes and you already have guys hitting on you.”

“He wasn’t hitting on me!” I take another sip of this drink. I don’t care if it’s for older women, if that’s what Zane meant. I like this.

“And you’re drinkingthat?”

I frown and set the glass on the bar. “Is there something wrong with it?”

Lucas grins. “No, here.” He lifts it back up. “Have some more. I’ll order you another.” I notice he orders himself a soda.

“Lucas, does the lipstick look bad?”

“What? Are you insane?”

I don’t have the patience for this. I just don’t have it in me to stand out in a bad way. The wedding was fine, and the dress was perfect, but that was yesterday and this is today. “Just tell me. It looks bad, doesn’t it?”

“Allie, you sat down and that entire Kappa-whatever squad had their eyes on you.”
