Page 43 of Say You'll Stay

To say the rest of the conversation has gone smoothly while I give them the brief version of the past several days would be a lie. Kat is two drinks in, but I think she made both doubles so far. She’s not happy about this, which I can’t blame her. She’s in a relationship with me, and I can understand this if the roles were reversed, but only to a point. It wasn’t planned and I’m handling it.

Dad and Jen are excited, though.

“Wait, what time is it?” Jen checks her watch. “Okay, the stores are closed, but we’ll go early in the morning. We need to get him presents!”

“You don’t have to,” I tell her. “He’s got a lot of stuff at home already.”

“Yeah, but he needs things here when he stays with you, Lucas. Clothes, shoes, toys. Oh, gosh! I’m so excited. Okay! Honey, let’s go to bed. We need to get up early.” Jen’s excitement, frankly, is the best reaction I could hope for.

Kat gets leaves the room, muttering to herself. “I can’t fucking believe this.”

Quietly, my dad sighs and rolls his eyes. He doesn’t keep his dislike for Kat to himself anymore. He tried, but the past few days have been bad between them. “Well, son, I can’t say I’m shocked, with all the girls you had calling you back then, but I’m glad it sounds like you at least picked a responsible one to knock up,” he pats me on the back. “I’m also glad you are stepping up, even if it is a little late in the game.”

“Yeah, me too. The next one I have, I’ll make sure to be there for everything that I missed with Jadon,” I say back. As if that makes it better.

My dad and Jen look at one another before my dad asks, “Are you planning on having another soon?”

“Oh, no. Not for a while, no. Besides, I don’t think Kat wants to give up so much freedom right now.” I don’t know that she actually wants kids at all. She’d have to change her lifestyle.

My dad and Jen look at one another again before Jen smiles and asks, “Are you planning on marrying Katrina soon, hon?”

“Um.” I honestly hadn’t thought about it since everything with Jadon and Allie, but it’s bound to come up now. Tom told me to stick to what I know, and I know Kat. “Well, yeah, once I get everything figured out, and Kat figures out what she wants to do with her life, we can plan a wedding and stuff.”

Why did the words taste bitter on my tongue?

I mean, what are my other options? I like Allie, but she wouldn’t want me after everything I’ve done to disrupt her life. Tonight being the most recent example of such sabotage. Besides, she’s serious aboutTed. I still don’t like him and she can do better.

Oh, and Kat figured out what she wants to do with herself. She told me last night she wants to go into modeling. She reached out to some agents and is scheduled to get some pictures taken next week. I’m not telling anyone, because I don’t see how she would want to settle down and want to be married if she’s off traveling for photoshoots and whatever models do.

“Well, hopefully you two figure it out soon. You have plenty of time to make the right decision,” my dad says. “Jen, you ready for bed?” he asks her and she nods. They both head to the guest room with giggles and excited whispers while I close everything up for the night in the house.

In the bedroom, Kat sits up on the bed, on her phone, not even looking up at me.

Oh, here we go.

Chapter22

Allie

I’ve been staring at the ceiling all morning. How long has it been? How long can I do it before I turn into a crappy parent that neglects their kid?

It’s okay to have a day like this, right? A day where the world spins in the wrong direction?

Between fighting with Ted and being in Lucas’ house with his girlfriend (where they act like proper adults and do adult things) I was looking forward to skipping out on that particular meeting.

What was it Ted said last night? Oh, right.

“That’s the guy you fucked without even knowing him? You won’t have sex with me, but you’ll sleep with the quarterback for the rival team?”

Lots of accusations. He made it sound bad or dirty and kind of painted me as the bad guy. I mean, sure, it wasn’t ideal, but I wouldn’t quite say that about the event that brought Jadon here.

That’s the hard part. Also, it’s getting extremely difficult to hate Lucas anymore. It almost feels like we are friends, which makes this situation easier. Ted should be happy, right? Not leaving teeth marks on my neck, like some barbarian or vampire.

But also, Lucas is an issue for me. I can’t be friends with someone that’s stupid pretty like him. There has to be distance or I could mistake his friendly gestures for something they’re very much not.

I’m afraid to check my phone at this point. Ted was mad at me last night when he said I was choosing Lucas over him. I’m not. I’m choosing Jadon, and there is no difference here from any other time other than Lucas suddenly being in the picture.

Ted does not need to get jealous. It’s not a good look for him. Besides, he’s the one that had all kinds of girls in high school, so he’s not being fair, exactly.
