Page 45 of Say You'll Stay

Since the accident, I’ve believed all memories matter, and the way the sun hits his hair captured perfectly, almost angelic. He’ll thank me someday.

“Do you really think that Ted is the one, Allie?”

My blood instantly freezes in my veins. Did he see something? I covered up that hickey as best as I could. Also, Ted rarely talks the way he did last night. Shit, did he hear? “Of course I do.”

He doesn’t say anything about my too-hyper response, but keeps driving. “How do you know?”

“That’s kind of personal, don’t you think? I don’t ask you why you think Katrina is the one.” Because I’m pretty sure it’s based solely on her appearance and has nothing to do with her not-cute toddler personality.

“I’m with her because I know her. But…” he chews on his lip while his words trail off into nothing.

Even if he got chapped lips, he’d still make it look attractive. I hate that I know it on the spot. “But what?”

“I think I’ve outgrown some things.”

“Is she still mad at you?” That’s probably his issue. Doesn’t want a woman with actualfeelings.

“Yeah,” he shrugs. “She’s always mad at me. That’s nothing new.”

Interesting. I probably would be too if he were mine.

“She’s just not what I expected, you know? We want different things and I don’t think we’re in the same place.”

Well, that one is obvious. She’s a spoiled brat, and he’s a semi-responsible new parent. She wants someone to foot the bill for whatever she does. He doesn’t make enough money to afford her lifestyle. That much is apparent.

“Can I ask you a hypothetical question?”

I detest hypothetical questions. “What?”

“If I weren’t with her and you weren’t—”

“Mommy look! A deer!”

I jerk my head to the side for a damn plastic deer in a front yard that is oddly close to a pink flamingo surrounded by a rainbow of small flowers I couldn’t name if I tried. “Yeah, Jadon, good job.”

“That was so cool! We should get one.”

“You like deer, buddy?”

“Yeah.”

Jadon likes everything. Lucas needs to learn that. He gets excited when he sees a squirrel in a tree. I mean, who doesn’t, though?

Lucas looks at Jadon over his shoulder. “My friend has a cabin by the lake. There’s lots of deer there. Maybe you and Mommy will want to come with me for the fireworks next Sunday.”

He did not just do that. Not that we had plans for the Fourth of July yet.

“It’s just a barbecue and we go out on his boat. But only if you didn’t have plans or anything.”

“I’ll think about it.” Few hours on a boat around Katrina? I don’t have enough fashion speak or nail bed information in my brain to carry on a conversation with her.

Wow, I’m a judgmental person today.

“Your dad can come, too; it’s a pretty good time.”

“Oh, okay.” That might help.

“Cool.” He shoots me a half-smile. “Here we are. Home sweet home.”
