“Work.”

“Ted, I really need to tell you something and I would appreciate it if you take one minute to listen.”

“Mhm.”

I am not this kind of person. I believe in privacy.

But I grab for it because if I don’t, I’ll scream out my guilt.

“The fuck are you doing, Allie?” He shoves my hand back, and my head bumps against the window. “What the hell is wrong with you?”

“Me? You’re accusing me of feelings and—and—and Lucas using Jadon, and then you have to answer a text? We’re trying to have a conversation here and I have to tell you something!”

“There’s something going on between you two, Allie, and I won’t be wasting my time if you’re not going to see things as they should be.”

“As they should–what? We hung out!”

“Have you two done anything else since he waltzed back into your life?”

“N–” I can’t lie about that, but I need to explain it to him.

“Thought so.”

“Well, maybe if you were answering your phone this week…”

“This has nothing to do with me, and everything to do with the fact that he holds some kind of power over you the way he does everyone else. He uses people, Allie. He sleeps around and gets whatever the fuck he wants. He treated you like shit and then dumped you, leaving you with a fucking kid. Now you’re telling me something happened and trying to say it’s my fault.”

He shakes his head and starts his car. “It’s unbelievable, Allie. You’re a lot smarter than this. I never would have imagined you were the type, but I guess I was wrong.”

Am I seeing the same person right now? Is this a joke? “Are you serious? You’re going to say those things about him when you slept around throughout high school and college, when you could have been with me all that time? You were just as bad as him! Yes, I kissed him. We did a little more than that, and almost had sex, and then I stopped it. It was a weird moment that we haven’t had again, and I’m deeply sorry. Okay? I’m sorry.”

Clearly, this wasn’t the right time to say that by the way he works his jaw around, practically foaming at the mouth.

“Get out of my car.”

“What?”

“Get. Out.” He leans over me and pulls on the handle. “Now.”

Chapter30

Allie

I had to request a ride home on an app.

My birthday was one entire day of peaks and valleys. I don’t know if that’s considered breaking up or not on a technical front, but he left me on my own an hour away from home.

I didn’t want to be rude, but the driver kept trying to make small talk, and I wasn’t in the mood for it. I gave him a big tip, hoping it would make up for my lack of response to his questions.

Dad was up waiting for me when I got home. He was curious at first, like he was expecting something, and then grabbed me before I dropped.

Ted is supposed to love me. All those years waiting for him and he just left me alone on the street, an hour away from home, like that. I’m not a perfect person, but really?

“He’s not allowed over here again, Allie. I don’t care what happened. He shouldn’t have done that. For fuck’s sake, someone could have kidnapped you.”

He didn’t press any more by the time I went up to bed. Lucas called a few hours ago, probably to talk to Jadon. I’m sure he remembered I was out and called my dad instead to say goodnight.

I waited until my dad went to bed before I got up and did the thing I do on bad days. I check on Jadon. His leg is hanging off his bed, and he’s drooling all over the pillow. He has the dinosaur bottoms on and his puppy firefighter shirt on. Typical.
