She’d said the wrong thing. I wriggled my legs as hard as I could, finally gaining my freedom. I kicked her in the stomach and landed on the ground. Karl was now sitting with Antoine, his wounds already healing. There was no time to think about that as Lilah landed in front of me.

“Not so fast, bitch. I haven’t finished with you yet.”

“That’s good because I haven’t finished with you either,bitch,” I roared.

We engaged in a fight. She pushed me to the ground and, like I’d done before, I flipped myself back up, jumping out of her reach just as she launched herself at me. She growled and grabbed me by the shoulders. Her claws dug deep, and I swore loudly at the pain.

“Do you surrender?” she asked.

“No. Fucking. Way.”

My anger was burning through me as I thought about what my parents and friends must have endured. I remembered Gustav in my head, trying to drive me insane so that I’d kill myself. I raked my claws down her back even as hers dug deeper into my shoulders. With what strength I had, I tore my body from hers. The pain was searing, but I did it.

Lilah looked in shock at me, eyes wide in disbelief. I took this opportunity to pounce. I knocked her backwards, my fangs at her throat, one of my claws directly over her heart.

“Do you give up?” I roared, the sound echoing over the area.

“Yeah, you win.”

I sat back on the sand next to her, both of us panting and bleeding. Karl and Antoine walked over to us. Karl had stopped bleeding, but the T-shirt he put on after our fight was a mess. I felt my pain receding and I noted Lilah’s injuries were too.

“Jesus, that was intense,” I said to no one in particular.

“You did good for a newbie.”

Was that admiration I heard in Lilah’s voice?

“Yeah, she did. But you owe me a T-shirt. It was one of my favourites.” There was mischief in Karl’s eyes.

“Shall we go back inside and get you lot cleaned up before lunch? Jeanie will have a massive freakout if she sees you all in this state.” Antoine spoke to us all, but his eyes were locked on mine, pride shining in them.

“Did I do okay?” I asked as we walked back to the house.

Lilah put her arm around me. “Girlfriend, you were fucking amazing. Gustav will definitely be pissing his boxers when he goes up against you two.”

“Look,” I said as we entered the living room. “I’m sorry I hurt you both.”

Karl grinned. “No harm, no foul. We heal quickly so no problem.”

“Hey.” Lilah squeezed my arm. “And we’re sorry we had to mention your friends and family. I hope you understand why.”

“I do. It was a hell of a shock, though. But now I know that when I come up against Gustav, he’ll use that as a dirty tactic to try and unnerve me. I’ll be ready for him.”

Antoine

Pride for my mate made me want to shout it from the rooftops. This woman was amazing. Taking on new challenges with enthusiasm, no matter how difficult they were. I’d felt her pain when Lilah and Karl mentioned the loved ones she’d lost. But although she was raging, she never let it consume her and remained focused on the fight. To see her in full battle mode was also a fucking turn-on. I didn’t care if that sounded wrong either.

“It doesn’t. I understand. Maybe I should get you to watch me fight more often.”

She sent a teasing giggle in my mind. This woman of mine was a handful… and I bloody loved it.

“Donna?”

She turned to look at me with a question in her eyes.

“Can I talk to you for a sec?”
