“Not very far. I took the test a few days ago and Blake and I have only been together once eight weeks ago.”

Christa turned her attention to Blake. “Can you hear the heartbeat?”

“I faintly heard it earlier after I shifted.”

Niev needed a moment to process their words. “How is that even possible?”

Christa gently smiled and quickly explained, “A wolf’s heart beats much stronger than that of a human fetus and a wolf’s hearing is extraordinarily sensitive. Do you have any symptoms yet? Morning sickness, fatigue, or tiredness?”

“I’ve been feeling tired and moody lately.”

“Yes, that is quite common as your body is trying to adjust to the new life growing within you and all the hormonal changes you’re going through right now.”

For a moment, everyone fell silent in which Niev wasn’t sure what else to say and Christa studied her closely.

“What else is on your mind, my love?”

This time Blake answered for her. “We need to know the child’s gender. We can’t wait the traditional nine months to find out.” His face was unmoved and didn’t show any emotions, his body stiff, his hands clenched to fists.

“I know there are blood tests that can determine the gender of the baby,” Niev continued.

Christa leaned back in her chair, her excitement slightly dampened. “Yes, you’re right, but we’ve never used them on us wolves. Tests like that are uncharted territory for those who carry wolf blood within us. It is too risky and if the wrong person gets his hands on our blood, we could be exposed for what we are.” A little hesitant, she turned to Blake. “May I speak freely?”

Blake gave her a quick, stiff nod.

“Is it important for you to know if the alpha bloodline continues with this child?”

Blake gave another quick nod and Christa turned her attention back to Niev.

“I’m assuming Blake has explained to you the meaning of his alpha blood and what it means for him to have it?”

“Yes.”

“So will the knowledge of the gender determine if you carry out this child?” A deep threatening growl came from Blake. Christa slightly turned her head toward him. “I’m not talking to you.” Her voice had lost all its kindness and soft touch.

Tears ran down Niev’s cheeks, the thought alone of losing the baby bringing great sadness to her. “I want the baby no matter what, but I understand the burden Blake is carrying. I don’t want our son to carry the same. If the baby is a boy, it might change my decision on whether I’ll stay here or live somewhere else. Knowing the gender doesn’t have anything to do with me wanting the baby or not.”

Christa took a deep, relieved breath, taking her time to answer. “I understand the unique situation you’re in, especially you, Niev. I’ve never seen a human carrying an alpha’s child.”

She paused, staring at the books behind Niev, taking another moment to think about her next words. After what felt like eternity she leaned forward and touched Niev’s hand, comforting her like one would expect of a mother.

“I’ll try my best to help with your wish, but I cannot promise you anything.”

“That isn’t all you need to know.” Blake grabbed a sharp blade from the glass cabinet and walked toward Niev and Christa. “Niev is blessed with an immensely powerful gift. A gift that we wish to keep a secret for now but that you, as her midwife, should know about moving forward.”

He then handed Niev the blade. She knew explaining her gift to Christa wouldn’t be as detailed as if she showed her. Niev took the blade from Blake and was about to cut her palm when Christa leaped forward. Blake put his hand on Christa’s shoulder and stopped her. Niev cut her palm and as usual, the cut disappeared before a drop of blood could form. Christa gasped and Blake stepped back, giving Christa the space and time to take Niev’s hand and inspect it.

“I’ve never seen anything like it. You have an incredibly special gift. May I ask where you got it from?”

“I don’t know. I don’t know my birth parents. I was abandoned at a church, and I was adopted as a young child. I only found out about this,” she nodded toward her hand, “three months ago.”

“I see.” Christa looked at Blake and pointed to the couch. “Sit next to your mate.”

He sat down without hesitation.

“I’ll tell you what I will and always have been telling every father-to-be. From now on you’re no longer important, your family will come first.” Her voice was very dominant, and her tone had an essence of the authority Niev had witnessed in both Blake and Seth. “You’re nothing compared to the woman who bears your child, and you will do everything to keep her safe and well. She gave up her body and life for you, so you in return will provide for her and love her with all your heart.”

Suddenly Blake started to shiver, his usually proud shoulders slumping as he buried his face in his hands. “How?”
