“We met before, do you remember that?” She didn’t want to give him a chance to ask her about what just happened and quickly wanted to give him something else to talk about.

“Yes, I do. I still have the loose change in my wallet for a rainy day.”

Leaning against the door frame, he looked over at her and smiled, his chocolate brown eyes reflecting the smiles’ sincerity. He’d tied his hair together, making him look even more handsome than before.

“So, what brings you so far out here?”

“Camping.”

He crooked his eyebrow. “Alone?”

“Yes, is that a crime?”

“Not at all. I just didn’t think you were the type of person who would go camping in the wilderness all by herself.”

She shrugged her shoulders and devoured the sandwich and apple slices. She knew the way she gobbled down the food wasn’t very attractive, but she was hungry and didn’t care too much about it. She felt his gaze on her and looked up. He was examining her with mixed emotions that she was unable to read. She mirrored him and studied him in return. He seemed to spend a lot of time out in the sun, his skin was tanned, and his hands were rough and calloused–those of a hard-working man.

She gathered all her willpower and asked the question she was most afraid of. Even though she didn’t want to talk about it, she needed to know how much he’d seen. “How long have you been standing there?”

She was afraid of his answer. She knew that if he’d been standing there long enough, he must have seen her body heal. He would have questions, and she wasn’t sure if she would be able and ready to answer them, but she just had to know.

“A while but you don’t know me, so there is no need to talk about what I saw.” His answer surprised her, she’d expected him to have a thousand questions for her. “Your secret is safe with me.”

A smile spread on his face. His eyes radiated some kind of trust that made her feel warm and safe. He leaned forward and took the empty plate out of her hands.

“I’ll be on the couch if you need anything.” He left the room, closing the door behind him.

She laid back, snuggled herself into the covers, and stared at the ceiling. Her thoughts drowned her; they were full of unknowns. She wasn’t even sure when her eyes closed, and her thoughts turned into uncontrollable dark dreams.

“YOU MOTHER FUCKER! What is your fucking problem? What are you doing?”

Niev startled out of her sleep and sat up straight in bed. It seemed to be early morning; the sun was dawning through the window. The male voice, which she was sure wasn’t Blake’s, seemed to come from the front door by the living room. Whoever it was, he seemed extremely angry.

“Whatever the hell I want.” Blake’s voice was calm and not the least bit irritated that someone had just yelled at him in his own home.

“You know the fucking law. Do you ever consider someone else but yourself?”

She heard footsteps coming toward the back of the cabin and quickly got out of bed before opening the bedroom door.

“Mind your own business.” Blake’s tone of voice didn’t change, he kept calm, and the footsteps stopped.

“You brought your business here so it’s no longer your own fucking business. No need to hide her. I know you brought someone on the grounds, I could smell her from a mile away.”

Niev walked down the small hallway and into the living area where Blake had spent the night. The man who had been yelling at Blake was standing in the middle of the living room, with Blake between the two of them. He was just a few inches shorter than Blake; his hair was short with a dirty blond color. To Niev’s surprise he had no shirt nor shoes on, he was only wearing a pair of ripped jeans. When he saw her, his eyes lit up in anger. He stepped toward her, but Blake stepped toward him, placing himself protectively between the blond man and herself. Blake’s hands formed fists and his whole body tensed up.

“Get out.”

Blake’s voice was still calm but there was something different about it. His tone had something authoritarian, something she hadn’t heard before. A shiver ran down her spine and goosebumps rose all over her skin. Her strong bodily reaction was something she’d never experienced before by just hearing someone’s voice. The blond man stopped in his tracks and let out a growl. He stared at Blake for a few more seconds before turning on his heels and slamming the door behind him. Blake’s body instantly relaxed and he calmly turned around to her.

“Do you want breakfast?” he asked casually, as if nothing out of the ordinary had happened.

She needed a few seconds to process what just happened before she could find her words again. “What was that?”

“Something I was hoping to avoid,” he sighed regretfully. He must have seen her confusion and worry, and softly added, “It’s nothing for you to worry about.” His tone indicated that he wouldn’t go into further detail. “So, would you like breakfast?”

She shook her head, “No, I should get going though.”

“Are you sure? You were very hungry last night.”
