“I couldn’t get inside the cabin–a red wolf blocked my way. Blake shifted and fought the wolf. He could’ve easily taken him, but a second wolf attacked Blake. The two wolves grabbed him and pulled him to the ground.”

She purposely left out the part about Blake’s voice echoing through her mind, not even sure if it had been real.

“I wanted to run away but when I turned, I saw a third larger white wolf. He was about to attack Blake from behind. I knew Blake wouldn’t survive a third wolf, and I also knew I wouldn’t survive without Blake. I pulled out my knife and tried to stop the wolf before he could hurt Blake. I jumped and stabbed the white wolf’s face.”

Mayra gasped, tightening her grip on Niev’s shoulders.

“The knife slipped over his face until it got stuck in his eye. He clawed me, and I fell to the ground. I’m not sure what happened after that, I just remember looking for Blake and hearing Seth’s voice.”

She heard Mayra quietly sob behind her. Seth’s muscles tensed more and more with each of her words. Tanner seemed tense but in deep thought, while Bill was the only one who seemed calm. He stood by the front door, being the only one who didn’t show fear, anger, or rage.

Seth’s voice filled with rage when he spoke. “We need to attack them while they are outnumbered.”.

Instead of answering, Tanner asked Niev another question. “What did the red wolf do when you saw him?”

“He growled and bared his teeth.”

At first, she wasn’t sure why it was so important. Then she realized Tanner wanted to know the wolf’s intentions before Blake attacked him. If the red wolf had a peaceful intention, then Blake would be in the wrong. The intention of the red wolf was significant to Tanner’s decision.

“I don’t believe Blake would’ve attacked the wolf if he had peaceful intentions. Why would Blake put me in such danger?”

Tanner seemed surprised that she’d caught on so fast. Niev watched him as he assessed the situation. He was silent, deep in thought while Seth’s anger grew with each passing minute.

“They attacked us. We need to strike back,” Seth furiously pressed out, his jaw clenched.

Niev could see Seth’s rage clouding his judgment. Tanner on the other hand seemed hesitant toward a violent solution. She remembered Blake saying that Tanner liked to keep the peace, and a vengeful attack wouldn’t help that in the slightest.

Niev took a deep breath, preparing herself for what she was about to do. “Do you really think that’s a wise idea?”

Seth gave her a cold glare. “You’re not part of this decision.”

“And your anger always seems to lead you to make unwise choices. Do I have to remind you that your anger nearly destroyed mine and Blake’s life?” She didn’t want to enrage him more, rather open his eyes to the other side. His clouded mind didn’t let him assess the situation from a neutral point of view.

“You’re out of line.” The authority in Seth’s tone filled the air around them and should’ve made her feel small and weak, but it didn’t. It impressed her, but he didn’t scare her.

“I might be, but your mind is clouded.”

“How dare you speak to your future alpha like that? They nearly killed you, your mate, and your child, and you dare to stand there and defend them!”

“Seth.” Mayra’s voice was weak. She was clearly afraid of her own son.

Niev got to her feet. She was angry but remained calm. It wouldn’t help the situation if she let her emotions get the best of her. “You’re right, they could’ve killed us. And maybe it was their intention to at least kill one of us, but all three of us survived. Have you thought about what that could mean? Maybe they knew that your brother’s death would cloud your judgment. You might give them exactly what they wanted.”

He showed no reaction to her words.

“Seth, we survived. Your brother is alive. Please, don’t let something that could’ve been, become your death sentence.”

“Seth, she’s right.” It was Bill’s calm voice from the back of the room, easing the tension in the air.

Seth opened his mouth to talk back, but Tanner silenced him with a simple gesture of his hand. The room stayed silent while Seth paced back and forth awaiting his father’s decision.

“Bill, I want to double our patrols and all families must move closer to the village. I want everyone within the inner circle. Everyone who left the grounds needs to return. It is no longer safe to roam around free on our territory. We won’t attack unless it is in self-defense. I don’t want unnecessary injuries on either side.”

Bill slightly bowed his head and quickly but calmly left the cabin.

“Seth, help evacuate the families from our borders. As soon as everyone is safe, I want you to take the lead on the patrols.”

Seth obviously wasn’t happy with his father’s solution, but he obeyed him and left the cabin.
