“Of course, you did. With your child’s blood, alpha blood also flows throughyourveins. Your defiance against him is a natural side effect of your pregnancy.” With a grin forming on his face, he chuckled. “You should’ve seen what it did to Mayra when she was pregnant with our children.” Then he turned serious again. “You earned my trust because you saw clearly when everyone else’s minds were clouded. You defied Seth to protect him, your actions weren’t out of selfish motivation. If you can forgive me for underestimating you, I’ll accept your request.”

“I forgive you.” Even though she didn’t see the need to forgive him for anything.

He stood up and signaled her to do the same. He laid his strong hands on her shoulders and said, “I, Alpha Tanner of the Timber Pack, ask you, Niev Snow, mate to my second son Blake, to join my pack. I’ll vow to provide for you and your unborn child. I vow to keep you two safe and protect you both from all evil. Will you accept?”

“I accept,” she answered without hesitation.

A shiver ran through Niev’s whole body, followed by a warm, welcoming feeling. She felt as if she belonged, as if she’d finally found her place. The sense of being part of something bigger and more important than herself was the most amazing feeling. Tears of joy ran down her cheeks as she looked up into Tanner’s proud and ecstatic face.

“Thank you,” she whispered out of breath.

“I wish this could’ve been done in a more celebratory manner.”

“It was beautiful.” And from far away she heard a wolf howl. She froze, afraid something bad had happened.

Tanner gave her a knowing smile. “Blake is welcoming you.”

After a few moments, more wolves started to howl until the whole forest seemed to be singing. The air around her vibrated, goosebumps rising on her skin. They both stood on the porch until the last howl faded away and with that, her tears ceased, but the goosebumps and cozy feeling remained.

Tanner walked inside and Niev followed him to the living room where Mayra stood by the open glass doors, looking toward the tree line. She turned around and as soon as she heard her husband enter the room, she frantically rushed toward him and reached for his hand.

“What happened?”

“Niev has honored us by joining our pack.”

Mayra instantly changed direction and pulled Niev to her chest, tightly wrapping her arms around her. “You truly have honored us.”

“You’re honoring me by accepting me into your family. I’m truly blessed.” Tears started running down Niev’s cheeks again and this time she wasn’t the only one. Mayra joined her, both women crying and hugging each other.

After Niev thought she had no more tears left to cry, Lyliann and the children joined her downstairs and gave her the same welcoming as Mayra had given her. The warm welcome from everyone reassured Niev that she’d made the right decision.

Tanner seemed in a hurry to leave and left before Mayra served breakfast. Of course, she’d already prepared a basket full of food for him and anyone else who needed something to eat while out patrolling. Alizia and Darron had just started to fight over who could have the last pancake when the front door opened and a woman with black hair and chocolate brown eyes came in. She looked tired but had a friendly face.

“Layla!” Mayra jumped out of her chair and ran down the hallway toward her daughter. “You should’ve told us that you were coming. One of us could’ve picked you up.”

“It was now or never, Mother,” she laughed as they embraced each other in a hug. “If I wouldn’t have left right away, I would’ve never been able to leave.”

Hearing her mother’s voice, Alizia ran around the table and stormed toward her. “I missed you, Mamie!”

Layla kneeled down and kissed her daughter’s forehead. “I missed you too. Have you been a good girl for Grandma and Aunt Lyliann?”

“Yes, and Aunt Niev, too.” Alizia took her mother’s hand and led her to the table. “Mamie, this is Aunt Niev.”

Niev quickly got to her feet and Layla waddled over to her, spreading her arms to welcome Niev.

“It’s very nice to meet you, Layla.”

“Oh Niev, the pleasure is all mine.” They both let go of each other and Layla took a seat next to Niev.

“Niev, would you like to share the joyous news, or may I?” Mayra seemed as excited as a child on Christmas Day.

Niev gave her an encouraging smile. “It’s all yours to share.”

“Niev joined our pack this morning. Your father has accepted her request to be part of the Timber Pack.”

Layla needed a few moments to internalize what her mother said, but then her entire face lit up and she pulled Niev into another hug. “Welcome Niev. I was wondering what all the howling was about.”

“She surprised us all. We had no idea it was happening,” Lyliann chimed in.
