“How much longer do you think this will be going on?”

“I honestly don’t know, but until either side wins this isn’t going to be over.” He ran his fingers up and down her spine. “I sure hope this ends before you go into labor.”

“I hope so too. I want you there by my side.”

She yawned and closed her eyes. Blake wasn’t sure how much time exactly passed while they were holding each other but the room became darker and darker. He didn’t want to leave her. She needed him so much more than he’d thought. He scolded himself for not being there for her, leaving her to struggle with her thoughts all alone. Even the strongest person needed someone to confide in, and he was supposed to be that person for her. It pained him more than anything to see her like this.

It surprised him that she was the one ending their snuggles. She stood up and walked to his dresser. He watched as she got dressed, grabbing warm clothes including one of his hoodies and a pair of thick socks.

“What are you doing?”

“I’ll stay out there with you tonight.” She pulled the hoodie over her head and rolled up the sleeves so she could use her hands. It was far too big and looked like a dress on her. She sat on the bed and put on the socks. “Grab that blanket and pillow for me, please.”

He knew she wouldn’t let him talk her out of it, so he did as he was told.

A few minutes later, they both stood underneath his grandfather’s tree. He took off his shorts, but not without noticing Niev’s eyes on him. She seemed to enjoy the view and bit that lower lip again. Before she could notice his excitement, he shifted and walked to his mate to lay down next to her. She took the blanket and wrapped herself in it. Instead of laying her head on the pillow, she placed it on his stomach. He wrapped his tail around her and closed his eyes, listening to the soothing sounds of the night.

“I don’t think I’ll ever get used to this. You’re so special.”

How lucky was he to have found her? Every other woman he knew thought of the wolves as something normal and uninteresting. For Niev, he was special, and she was truly fascinated by him. He turned his head and gently licked her cheek.

He felt Seth’s presence push against his mind. ‘What are you doing, father told you to rest.’ Seth didn’t seem upset, but rather confused.

‘I am.’

‘Niev kicked you out?’

‘She’s here.’Blake shared a picture of Niev cuddled up next to him.

Seth seemed surprised but didn’t ask any further questions. He separated the bond between them, and Blake closed his eyes listening to Niev’s heartbeats, as he slowly fell asleep.

Niev woke up the next morning as the first rays of sun warmed her face. Blake was still fast asleep and even snored a few times. His huge chest rose up and down, his tail still wrapped around her. She closed her eyes and enjoyed the cuddles with his wolf. Blake, and especially his wolf, calmed her and made her worries seem less present.

Loud, high-pitched laughter made her open her eyes just in time to see Alizia and Darron run out and jump on her.

“Aunty Niev, did you sleep out here with Uncle Blake?”

“Yes, sweet Alizia, but be careful not to wake him up. We don’t want to scare him out of his sleep, do we?”

Darron walked over to Blake’s large head and slowly tapped his muzzle. “Up, up.”

“Gentle, Darron.”

Alizia quickly grabbed his hand and helped him to slowly stroke Blake’s nose.

His ears twitched, and he opened his eyes. He didn’t seem surprised to see them and must have pretended to sleep. He licked over their faces then rose to his full size, stretching out his body.

“Ew no Uncle Blake! I just washed my face!”

He attempted to lick over her face again, but Alizia ran into the house followed by Darron.

Niev gently touched his neck, fondling his soft fur. “Good morning, my gentle wolf.” He nudged her with his nose, then stepped back before shifting and quickly grabbing his shorts.

“Don’t leave yet!” Mayra’s head appeared by the glass doors. “Would you mind taking breakfast with you? I already started and only need a few more minutes.”

He nodded, then turned his attention to Niev, pulling her toward him. “How did you sleep? Was it too cold or uncomfortable?” He took her face in his hands and put her hair behind her ears.

“I loved it.” She laid her hands around his neck, weaving her fingers through his hair. “We should sleep underneath the moon more often.”
