Her answer came without hesitation. “I’ll do as you ask.”

Relief spread over Tanner’s face and his tense muscles relaxed slightly.

In contrast to his father’s reaction, Blake’s muscles stiffened. “Niev, you don’t have to–”

Seth interrupted him with a cold snarl, “She’s made her choice.”

Niev ignored the two of them and looked at Tanner. “I’ll heal as many wolves as I can. I have to warn you though, they won’t like it. As far as I understand, I’m perceived as a witch that taints the souls of the ones I touch. I’m not sure how many would want me to heal them.”

“Let that be my worry.”

Without even thinking about it, she blurted out in protest. “You will command them? That would go against their wishes.”

She was opposed to the thought of touching–especially sharing her blood–with someone who didn’t allow it. If he used his alpha authority on his men, they had no other choice but to do what they were told, even if it was against their will. Trying to compose herself, she clenched her hands into fists.

Seth tensed back up. “Don’t question your alpha! This is war in case you haven’t noticed. Families will die if we don’t defeat the enemy.”

Niev shot a deadly glare toward Seth. “I know exactly what kind of situation we are in. Must I remind you of the wolves Blake and I had to fight off?” She looked back to Tanner without waiting for a response from Seth. “I’ll do as you ask of me, Alpha, even though I don’t agree with your methods. You’ll find me at Christa’s cabin.”

Without further ado, she turned on her heels and left the office. She quickly walked out the front door and made her way to Christa’s cabin. Instead of taking the shorter way through the village she headed toward the forest outskirts to avoid the hateful stares she would receive walking on the main road. She hadn’t come far when she heard footsteps from behind quickly catching up to her.

“I’ll walk with you.” Blake took her hand and entangled his fingers with hers.

“I shouldn’t have questioned him. I promised to submit.”

“You did submit to him.”

“Any other pack member would’ve followed his orders without question.”

“You’re no ordinary pack member and he knew you would never follow him blindly. He knows you respect him no matter what.” He stopped and pulled her into a hug. “I’m proud of you, and I really enjoyed how you put Seth in his place.”

She looked up and saw a smirk on his face.

“Reminding him that you stood up and fought a grown wolf was amazing and his expression was priceless.” He kissed her before looking around. “Why are you walking this way?”

“I try to avoid the death glares of the pack. So, I decided to walk around the village.”

He nodded and they continued walking. “Father has allowed me to stay with you while you heal the men. He doesn’t like me being away from the fights, but I won’t leave your side. If he wants you to heal everyone, I’ll stay with you.”

“I’m glad I’m not the only one with a rebellious side.”

He squeezed her hand a little tighter. “Did you get enough sleep? I stayed with you as long as I could, but father wanted me to help plan the attack.”

“I did.” She looked at him and saw that something was bugging him. “What is on your mind?”

He sighed. “You read me far too well.”

“Isn’t that what I’m supposed to do?”

He smiled and nodded.

“Are you going to tell me what is bothering you or are you going to avoid my question?”

“You’re relentless. I’ve always wanted to stay out of pack business. I didn’t want anyone to think I’m trying to undermine Seth by manipulating decisions that need to be made. It has worked for a long time, but now my father wants me to be part of the decisions he’s making.”

“And now you’re afraid people could see it as you trying to undermine Seth even though it’s not your choice?”

“Yes.”
