“She’s out in the village making sure the families are calm and taken care of. Have you seen Niev? I sent her to grab us warm water, but it has been a while.”

“She’s downstairs, I think she’s still weakened because of the last few days.” A flat out lie, but with his mate in labor and the only woman who could help her through it being Mayra, she didn’t need to know about the happening’s downstairs.

“Poor thing. I should’ve sent her back to bed.”

Finally, they’d lifted the wolf off of Niev. Blake sighed in relief. She was breathing–very faintly, but she was breathing and that meant she was still alive. He gently inspected her body. She had a few broken ribs and bruises all over. Anxiously, he laid his ear in her tiny and barely noticeable bump. He took a deep breath and listened. It felt like an eternity before he heard the little heartbeats. Both were strong and had a healthy rhythm. Another sigh of relief escaped him as he gently picked up her delicate frame. He walked across the chaos to the sofa and laid her down.

“She will be alright,” Seth reassured him, laying a hand on Blake’s shoulder. “She’s strong and brave. It looks like she stabbed the wolf in his heart. Most of the blood here is his.”

Blake took his eyes off Niev and looked at the wolf. Only then did he recognize the wolf, and only because of the wound on his face and missing eye. He was the white wolf she’d fought the first time around. Only this time, she killed him.

“Her blood could’ve mixed with his. We should make sure he’s definitely dead and won’t heal from his injuries.”

Seth nodded and ordered the men to take care of it.

“Seth, go upstairs. Make sure the children or Mayra don’t come down here. They shouldn’t have to see this. I’ll be fine, and Niev just needs some time to heal. The babies seem fine too.”

Seth nodded again. He walked to the kitchen, grabbed the bowl that Niev must have dropped, and filled it with warm water before heading up stairs.

Blake held Niev’s hand, assuring her she was no longer in danger as he listened to his sister’s labor. Then he realized that his father must also be in deep worry for his mate.

He hesitantly gave Niev a kiss on the forehead. “I’ll be right outside, not far away from you. No one will hurt you anymore.” He stepped outside and shifted, finding his father’s mind right away.

‘Mother, Lyliann, and the childrenare safe. Layla is in labor and so far, everything is going smoothly. Niev was attacked by the same wolf she’d fought before. She killed him with a knife to his heart but got injured in the process. She’s doing fine and so are the babies. How are things with the Skadu Pack, do you need me to send the warriors back your way?’

His father answered straight away. ‘Most Skadu Wolves left in search of their families, very few have stayed and are considering joining our pack. We are bringing back the injured and dead.’

‘How many injured and dead?’

‘About fifteen severely injured and three dead on our part. I’ll be informing their families soon.’His father paused for a few seconds as he realized what Blake had just told him.‘Did you just say babies?’

‘Yes, we are having twins. We only found out after Tristan was injured and hadn’t found the right place or time to tell anyone.’

‘Selene has truly blessed you with a strong woman.’

He stayed silent for a while, but didn’t cut the mind bond. Blake sensed he wanted to say more so he waited till his father was ready.

‘I shouldn’t have asked her for such a great sacrifice. With or without carrying twins, she’s still carrying your child and I endangered her and her unborn children. I hope you can forgive me.’

Blake had expected anything but this. His father had always been kind, but he never apologized for decisions made. He thought apologizing for past decisions was weak.

‘There is nothing to forgive. You did what was right for the pack. Father, it was for this reason Niev didn’t want to tell anyone about the twins. She knew you and everyone else would treat her with even more caution.’

‘I’ll forever be in her debt.’With that, his father severed the bond and Blake shifted back into his human form.

He slowly and carefully carried Niev upstairs making sure neither Mayra nor the kids saw her. He gently laid her on the bed and held her as he listened to Layla’s and Michael’s child being born. It didn’t take long before Blake heard the baby’s first cry.

“Congratulations on your first baby boy Michael and Layla.” Mayra’s voice was full of joy and pride. Blake listened as Layla and Michael were handed their boy and Mayra asked if Michael wanted to cut the umbilical cord.

About an hour after the first cry, Blake heard Seth take his mother aside and tell her what had happened downstairs during Layla’s labor. Within seconds she burst into the room followed by Seth. She came over and kneeled on the floor by Niev’s head. She gently stroked her hair as tears ran down her cheeks.

“Oh, my sweet child.” She looked up. “Blake, I had no idea. I would’ve helped her if I did.”

“I know, Mother. I don’t blame you for anything.”

Seth chimed in. “We weakened our border patrols in order to have enough men for the attack. He must have slipped through and surprised her downstairs.” He looked to Blake. “If anyone, you should blame me for this, it was my idea to reduce the patrols and take the strongest warriors for the attack. It left our families vulnerable.”

“We all knew of the risks, and we all agreed it was a necessary risk to take. Without it, we wouldn’t have been able to win at all.” Blake gently kissed her head, holding Niev even tighter. “She’s fine and so are the twins.”
