Katharina gasped, putting her hands in front of her mouth and took a step back while Olivia started sobbing uncontrollably.

It took a few moments for both women to get ahold of their feelings. Olivia slowly lifted her head and looked at Niev with big, puffy eyes.

“Chayed isn’t coming back?”

“No, he’s not.”

Her face changed a little and Niev could see a little relief mixed in with the fear she’d seen before. “You killed him?”

“I did.”

“How would you be able to kill a man of his size?” Katharina chimed in, her face in total disbelief.

“During the attack he came to our house. My sister-in-law was in labor, and he surprised me in the kitchen while everyone else was upstairs tending to the birth. He came to kill me because I had brought dishonor on him. You see, the first time he and I met was when he tried to kill Blake. I couldn’t let that happen, so I stabbed his face. He’d come back to kill me and everyone else in the pack. I couldn’t let that happen. So as he shifted, I stabbed him in the heart.”

“And you survived?” Olivia still seemed to be struggling with how to feel about her mate’s death.

Niev nodded and grabbed the scalpel out of her bag. She stretched her hand out so that Olivia could see it and cut her palm. As usual, the cut healed less than a second later. Olivia’s eyes widened, and she reached out for Niev’s hand to inspect it.

“I can heal from anything, and my blood also heals others. With your permission, I would like to heal your back and any other injuries he gave you.”

Olivia nodded in agreement and turned her back to Niev again. As Niev was healing her wounds, Olivia’s breathing became more regular.

“When Chayed came back with only one eye, everyone lost their respect for him. Up until that point he was the best warrior we had. Everyone talked about how great and fearless he was, but after that, everyone started to talk behind his back about the woman who defeated him.”

Niev could sense Olivia’s need to talk, so she quietly continued to heal her.

“He thought he’d killed you. One day, he returned to me furious. He’d seen the alpha’s son who they’d attacked when he lost his eye. He was without injury and he assumed the same happened to you. He got more and more furious with each day that passed and all he could talk about was how to make you pay.”

Even though Olivia didn’t say it, Niev knew Olivia was the one who took the beatings from him. Niev hated not just him, but herself, for having put Olivia in such a position.

“I’m sorry, Olivia.”

“You’ll be a great luna one day.”

At first, Niev didn’t understand what Olivia was trying to tell her. Then she remembered what Blake had told her the night Tristan had been attacked. Some packs called the mate of the alpha their luna, the moon on earth to their pack. Olivia thought because of Blake’s alpha blood, he would be the next alpha and therefore Niev the next luna. It broke her heart for Blake. It must feel like a thousand knives stabbing through his heart and there was no way with his great hearing he couldn’t hear the conversation.

“I’m sorry to disappoint you, but I won’t be the next luna of the pack.”

That seemed to surprise Olivia. “Are you not the mate of the alpha standing outside?”

“I am, but he’s not the future alpha of our pack. He’s Alpha Tanner’s second born son, which makes his brother Seth the next alpha in line.”

They all fell silent until Niev had finished healing all of Olivia’s wounds. She stood up and looked down at her, who was still a mixture of emotions. Niev was sure that even though he’d been a horrible mate to her, she still had feelings for him. Otherwise she wouldn’t have been with him in the first place. Olivia was probably grieving the man she’d fallen in love with, but was also relieved that he was gone.

“I’m truly sorry for your loss, he was your mate no matter how horrible he was to you.”

Olivia’s face softened with a smile. “Thank you.”

“Please let me know if there is anything I can do for you.”

She nodded and looked back down at her feet. Niev turned around, leaving Katharina to console Olivia.

Blake was already waiting outside. He spread his arms right away, pulled her into a tight hug, and whispered in her ear, “You did amazing.”

“It doesn’t feel like it.”

She felt as if she’d failed in some sense. Even though she knew she’d done everything right. He’d deserved to die and Olivia deserved to live the rest of her life without someone beating her. Niev hoped that she would overcome her grief and see that the world out there had so much more to give. She deserved a happy life with someone by her side who would love and protect her like Blake did with her.
