Niev was interrupted by Christa handing her a plate. “I’m glad you’re so interested in these books.”

“Honestly it’s fascinating, and I think if I understand the workings of the body better I can one day help you better.”

“One dayyoucould become healer of the pack if you would like.”

Niev had known that Christa teaching and mentoring her would one day end up in her becoming the pack’s next healer, but it scared her. There was still so much more to learn for her to be able to do half of what Christa was capable of doing. She was afraid of how the pack would react to her becoming the healer. She only wanted to be such an important part of them if they fully accepted her, and she wasn’t sure that would ever be the case.

After eating, Niev put the books aside. “Thank you, Christa. I’ll see you tomorrow if that is good with you?”

“Of course, it is.”

Niev made her way back to the village and walked to Lyliann and Seth’s house, where a few other women were already waiting. Lyliann saw her coming, spread her arms, and pulled Niev into a warm hug.

“I’m glad you’re coming.”

“Thank you for inviting me.” Niev was a little nervous and tried to avoid looking at everyone.

“We are just waiting on Mayra and our drivers before we can head out.”

That surprised Niev. “You don’t drive?”

Lyliann shook her head. “I don’t but I’m assuming you do.”

“Yes, or at least until the bump grows too big. That’s the deal I have with Blake,” she said lightly.

“I hope by that point you and Blake will have moved to your new home so driving will no longer be necessary for you.” She gazed to the west side of the village, to the side where Tristan’s house was hiding behind the trees. “There she is.” Niev followed her gaze and saw Mayra walking toward them. “Now we just wait for the vans.”

Mayra went around and greeted every woman who had come, then she spread her arms and pulled Niev into a hug. “I am so glad you’re coming today.”

“Thank you for having me.”

After about ten more minutes of the women chatting, two vans came driving down the road and stopped in front of them. Mayra quickly separated the women into two groups, and they all found a seat in one of the vans. Niev was in Lyliann’s van and Mayra took a seat in the second. None of the women seemed to be able to drive, because the men who had brought the vans stayed inside and drove off as soon as everyone was loaded up.

The women chatted along while Niev stayed quiet and listened. They all seemed to be good friends and Niev didn’t want to chime in and feel like the odd one out even more.

“Niev, how did you and Blake meet?”

Niev turned her head to the brunette who had asked the question. She seemed around Niev’s age, even though Niev knew she probably was much older. The aging difference was still hard for her to figure out.

“Kasandra!” Lyliann’s tone was stern as if she wanted to warn Kasandra not to cross the line. “Niev, you don’t have to answer that if you don’t feel comfortable.”

“It’s fine, I’m sure everyone else wanted to ask the same thing.” The van drove onto the highway, turning east opposite Cliff’s gas station and Blake’s cabin. “The first time I saw him was at a little corner store buying some chocolate and the second time we met at Cliff’s gas station. My car broke down after a camping trip and Blake helped me.”

“Will you have a commitment ceremony?” Kasandra asked while the others curiously listened.

“We talked about having one but haven’t planned anything.”

“Do you have a baby name yet?”

Niev shook her head. That was one of the topics she wanted to avoid, afraid she wouldn’t be able to keep the secret.

“Will you be moving closer to the village soon?”

“Yes, Blake wants to fix up a house for us.”

“Is it true that Christa is mentoring you?”

Lyliann quickly chimed in. “Kasandra, stop bombarding Niev with questions. You just met her.”
