Breathless, he pulled away and caressed her cheek with his thumb. “I know you feel like you’ve let them down but that isn’t true. You’ve saved so many more lives than were lost.”

Leaning into his touch, she took a moment to let him soothe her a little longer. Only when she felt calm enough did she nod and continue their walk.

There were a few men waiting out front who all, thankfully, seemed mildly injured, at least for werewolves.

Before she walked over to Christa’s door, Blake pulled her into a hug. “Please take care of yourself. Don’t overdo it.” He almost pleaded with her, knowing her far too well.

“I won’t, I promise. You too, okay?”

He nodded and tucked a loose strand of hair behind her ear. “I’ll pick you up later so you can pack up your belongings from the main house and I can finally take you home.”

“Home sounds nice–just the two of us.”

She pulled his face down to hers and their lips met before she watched him walk back to the village. It was hard to see him leave. Especially after she’d hoped to be able to spend some time with him after all they’d gone through.

She walked over to Christa’s cabin and the men that were waiting in front. “Is Christa out or just busy inside?”

A slender man with blue eyes and dark brown hair who was standing first in line looked up and smiled at her. Niev recognized him as Kai, the pack’s lead warrior.

“She’s here, but never too busy for a woman carrying one of Selene’s children.” He stepped aside for her to go inside.

“That is very kind of you, Kai, but I’m not here for myself. I wanted to see if Christa needed a helping hand.”

“I’m sure she’ll appreciate that.”

Niev gently knocked, opened the door, and popped her head inside. “Christa, may I come in?”

Christa was standing behind a man sitting on a chair and looked up, her face instantly changing to worry. “What happened? Are you hurt?” She quickly walked toward Niev, completely ignoring what she was doing just a second ago.

Niev quickly stepped inside and closed the door behind her. “I’m fine, I just wanted to see if you could use some help.”

That didn’t seem to calm Christa at all. “You should be at home resting from everything!”

“Christa, I promise you I’m fine. I’ve rested enough, and I can’t just sit around and do nothing while you’re overrun with work. Please let me help.”

Christa stood in front of her with a stern look on her face that changed once she saw how determined Niev was. “You’re right. I could use some helping hands, and I’ve promised I would teach you.”

“Thank you.”

She turned back to the man sitting on the chair and Niev followed her. The man’s shoulder looked awfully out of place. Without warning and with a few skillful moves from Christa, the shoulder popped back in.

The man seemed a little shocked, his face turning pale, but he got up and quickly walked to the door. “Thank you.”

Before the door could close behind him, Kai stepped in. As she inspected him, Niev saw that his upper arm seemed twisted. Not at a joint like one would expect but in the middle of the arm as if the bone had been broken and rotated.

Christa sighed. “Kai, do you mind waiting a minute so I can go check on Brandon and Elias?”

He shook his head and made himself comfortable on the chair. “Of course not.”

Christa gestured to follow her and led Niev into the back of her house. “Brandon and Elias were badly injured during the fight,” Christa started to explain. “Brandon had his back broken and is paralyzed from the chest down and Elias lost his arm.”

“Will they both recover?”

“I’m hoping Brandon will recover to some degree. I’ve realigned his vertebrae and I’m hoping that will do the trick. As you know, wolves heal faster than humans, I would estimate at double the rate. I’m hoping that his nerves heal before they suffer permanent damage. We need to keep him as still as possible while caring for him.”

“I could heal him. You could draw my blood again and inject it into his back or do you think that is too risky?”

They had stopped in front of one of the guest bedrooms. “It could be risky. If we don’t inject it at the right spot, we could lose whatever progress he has made.”
