“I want you to feel comfortable here, and I understand the struggle you’re going through right now.”

“You’re the best man I could have ever asked for.” Now it was her turn to lift his hand to her lips and gently kiss it, trying to put all her love for him in this small gesture.

He parked the truck in front of their cabin, opened his door, and quickly walked around to open hers. “Sometimes I wish we could have met differently.”

She took his hand and weaved her fingers with his. “But had we met under different circumstances, would our relationship be the same?”

Holding the door open for her, he said, “I don’t believe so.”

She knew the circumstances and everything that they’d gone through together were horrible, but also necessary for their relationship to grow and strengthen.

“Would you have wanted our relationship to be different?”she asked.

Blake picked her up and carried her bridal style to the couch where he sat down holding her in his strong tender arms.

“I like what we have together. I just wish it would’ve happened under a more stress-free and enjoyable setting. I know what we’ve been through made us grow together. I just wish it didn’t have to involve you in danger or you having to drain yourself to keep me alive.”

She leaned her head on his chest and listened to his heartbeat. “I never want to be without you.”

He tugged her tighter to his torso. “I’ll always be by your side.”

A Sweet Surprise

Blake woke up early the next morning. He tried not to wake Niev as he climbed out of bed, got undressed, and grabbed his clothes. She looked so peaceful, yet he knew her true strength and the force that slumbered within her. She was a true beauty on the outside but also within, her kind heart and willpower were what made her the fiercest woman he’d ever met.

He wanted to lean down and kiss her goodbye. He wanted to touch her smooth, delicate skin with his lips, wanted to shower her with all his love, but he knew his touch would wake her and she deserved a little bit of sleep. Still naked with his clothes in his hands, he turned to the hallway and with quiet steps, walked out of the cabin onto the porch. The air was crisp, and he could smell the rain on the leaves that had fallen throughout the night. He stretched and dropped his clothes next to him on the floor.

Taking a deep breath, he let his wolf’s soul take control over his body and jumped off the porch. His transformation was easy. With Selene being so close to him, he barely felt his bones break and realign and his skin tearing felt more like an annoying itch. It felt as if Selene was right next to him, inches out of his reach. The days leading up and especially the night before she was the closest, it felt as if he could hear her whispering. His wolf felt the strongest during these hours. He turned around to the porch and gently picked up his clothes with his muzzle before running into the woods.

As usual, all other animals parried out of his way, scared of him and his sharp claws digging into the ground. He loved his dominance over the other living beings around him. His wolf and alpha sense demanded that kind of fear and respect. His own pack didn’t give him this kind of feeling, so he enjoyed it even more than his brother or father would have. It was only a tiny glimpse of what his life could’ve been if he’d been the first born. Not wanting to let the amazing feeling of power fade away, he took a longer route toward the village and Tristan’s house. Unlike what he’d told Niev, he wouldn’t be working today. At least, not for the lumber company.

As he approached Tristan’s house, Blake shifted back and put on his clothes before stepping out of the tree line. Tristan was already sitting on the front porch, waiting eagerly it seemed. He’d taken off his cast early, against Christa’s advice.

“You’re late.” But Tristan didn’t seem annoyed, rather curious, and chuckled. “Did she not want to let you go?”

“She was still asleep when I left and doesn’t know I am here. She thinks I am at work.”

“You lied to her?” He crooked his eyebrow, his face hardening accusingly.

“I said I would work half the day and be back by this afternoon. I want this to be a surprise.”

“Half a lie is still a lie,” Tristan said as he started walking toward the village.

“I didn’t really lie. I said I’d be working and that’s what I’m going to do.”

Tristan nodded and seemed at ease.

After Niev had saved Tristan’s life, he’d been even more in awe of her than he’d been before. He seemed to see her as his sister, someone who needed to be protected. With the way he was acting, annoyed by a simple half lie toward her, Blake knew Tristan would protect her even if that meant acting against his best friend. Blake’s alpha pride wanted to let Tristan know that Niev was his and his only, but his human side knew Tristan meant it well. He didn’t want to take Niev away from him, rather help him protect her.

Tristan gave him a concerned look. “I can feel your wolf acting up.”

“You being so protective over her is bothering him. She’s mine.” Blake tried to keep his voice calm, but it wasn’t as casual as he’d hoped it to be.

Tristan stepped away from Blake and put his hands up in the air. “Blake, I know she’s yours. I don’t want to take her from you.”

“I know that. She’s like a sister to you, and you just want to protect her. It’s just my wolf being possessive over her. I’ve never felt like this before. No one has ever affected my wolf like she does. She likes him just as much as she likes me.”

They broke through the tree line and walked through the village toward the little path that would lead to his and Niev’s new home.
