“It takes some practice, but this early on, the bone has barely started the healing process so it’s quick and easy. You also need to act fast after injecting the anesthetic. We metabolize faster than humans, so medication wears off quicker.” She showed Niev how to put a cast on before Kai was all set to leave.

The rest of the men in line had similar problems and were sent home with casts and orders to rest up. It was interesting to learn, listen, and watch Christa work. She offered to let Niev attempt a realignment on a wrist fracture, but Niev felt too uncomfortable to do so. Christa didn’t seem bothered by Niev’s insecurity and didn’t push her any further.

For lunch they decided they should split up. Niev went to have lunch with Brandon and Christa went to check on Elias. Niev gently knocked on the door and popped her head inside.

“Brandon, would you like to eat lunch with me?”

He sighed annoyed. “I’d prefer to get up and walk out of here.”

“I know but to do so you’ll need energy, and your body will only be able to get that through food.”

“Relentless just like your mentor.” His tone was rough, though she heard a little amusement in it.

She pulled up a chair next to the bed and sat down, cutting the meat and vegetables into small pieces, so it was easier for him to chew.

“Thank you,” she said breaking the silence again.

“What do you have to thank me for?”

“For going out and fighting for me and the pack. You kept us safe.”

“It’s my duty to protect the pack, and I’d do it again.”

They ate in silence as Niev slowly fed him. He didn’t eat much but at least it was something. She left the room and joined Christa who was still with Elias. Niev quietly opened the door and stepped in. To her surprise, Elias was sitting up on the edge of the bed.

“Hello Elias. It’s good to see you up,” Niev greeted him with a warm smile.

He looked up with a face that looked like all his hope had been shattered into a million pieces. “At least you tried.”

At first Niev didn’t understand, but Christa stepped to the side and revealed his arm stump that seemed to have healed nicely.

“Your blood has healed his infection but to Elias’ great disappointment, it only closed the wounds.”Christa grabbed the dirty bandages, her next words meant for Elias. “I’ll update your mother. She has been waiting to take you home again, but I would prefer if you would stay another night.”

“Whatever you want.” He turned his back to them, and they both took it as a sign to leave.

Niev had hoped that her blood would heal him again, but it seemed as if she’d found her gift’s limitations. She had to admit that she’d become quite confident in her healing powers–she had the feeling that she could heal anything.

As if Christa could read her mind, she said, “I believe that had his arm been even slightly attached to the rest of his body, you would’ve been able to heal him. With it fully gone your blood can only heal what is left.”

“I wish it would’ve worked.”

She was disappointed in herself. Logically, she knew it was silly, but the last few days she’d had the feeling of being able to do anything.

They walked back to the examination room in the front of Christa’s house where, to her surprise, Blake was waiting for her. He smiled and closed the distance between them.

“There you are.” He pulled her into a hug and kissed her forehead. “Do you want to take a break and come with me to pack up all our things?”

She turned to Christa. “Do you need me for anything else?”

“No, you two go and spend some time together.” Christa lovingly but firmly pushed them out the front door.

Blake interweaved his fingers with hers and started walking toward the village. “I’ve asked Tristan to bring us the truck so you can get settled in your new home.”

“Thank you.”

“I’m not sure I’ve done anything that needs thanking. For you, I’d do anything.”

“I know and that is what I’m thankful for.”
