“I don’t know sir, I just got a call from…”

“Enough,” Owen raised his hand. He picked upThe Art of Warand shook it. “You ever read this, Hanneman?”

“No sir.”

Owen rose out of his chair, stood with his back to Karl, and said, “Let your plans be dark and impenetrable as night, and when you move, fall like a thunderbolt.”

Karl was a Diamonds veteran, a server for over twenty years, and he’d never known a Diamonds without the Cleaner. He was the assassin at the top of the pile, the hitman who sought and trained the contract killers below him. The Diamonds were about to enter a new era.

“Very profound, sir. I think we need to put some serious manpower on this.”

“Let me handle the logistics, Hanneman. I just need you to take care of business. Are you with me?”

Karl swallowed a lump in his throat. He hated this part. “The Cleaner? Are you sure?”

“Don’t question my decision,” Owen said calmly. “The Cleaner and both his boys. Purification, understand?”

Karl had a few calls to make. Owen couldn’t risk Nash or his workers cracking under pressure and revealing the Diamonds’ secrets, and while every person had their limits, the dead didn’t share secrets. Karl now had to make arrangements, call his contacts in the prison system, and get Nash and his boys taken out before they could talk. Even a lifelong Diamond like the Cleaner – a man who’d killed three-hundred-plus people at Owen’s request – wasn’t safe from the big man’s unforgiving iron fist.

“Understood, sir.” Karl readied himself to leave, but he couldn’t keep his curiosity at bay. “Sir, what are you planning on doing?”

Still at the window, Owen said, “In the midst of chaos, there comes opportunity. We have an army, she doesn’t. We have all the tools necessary to take someone out and leave no trace behind. She might have bested three, four of us, but it’s time to descend. If she thought Nash was hell, well, maybe it’s time I came out of retirement, put my gloves back on one more time.”

“Sir, really? It’s been what, fifteen years?” Karl felt a prickle in his fingertips. He couldn’t deny the excitement of seeing Owen Angels back in the field again. He had fond memories of those early days.

“Oh yes. I’m going to show Miss Dark that there’s more than one killer around here.”
