Death had come for me many times before.

But every time I died, I was reborn.

I let out an audible breath which echoed unnaturally, amplified through the space. Along with the exhaust of the energy, a huge weight dropped from my heart, down my sides, and out through my feet.

Now, as I stared at myself in the mirror, little puffs of black energetic clouds exited my body and drifted away. Like I was emitting the toxins that had consumed me.

Like I was shedding all the negativity.

The years fell off my face. No puffy eyes or dark circles. My skin appeared fresh and hydrated, as if I were in the perfect state of health. My finger reached to my cheek. The skin felt hydrated. More so than I ever recalled.

“As always, you look beautiful.” Jamie’s voice came from behind, startling me.

I turned away from the mirror and glanced back to the middle of the dancing floor. Jamie sparkled in his black suit, standing beneath a million little lights which seemed to glow like stars, floating through the space around us.

A smile crossed his face. The kind of smile that someone gives you when they’re looking at you with awe. He extended an arm.

“Want to dance?” he asked.

“That would be… in the words of a boy I used to know… pretty damn epic.” I walked toward him, heels clacking even louder against the surface below.

“Pretty damn epic, indeed.”

“What is this, Jamie?” I asked, as his hand curled around mine. “I know I’m dreaming… but… what’s happening?”

“This is part of the process,” he said.

“The process?”

A bright glow formed around his aura as he leaned in more closely, snaking his free arm around my back. I took a deep breath, a rush of adrenaline shooting through my body at his closeness.

“My process of saving you,” he whispered into my ear. “But, more specifically, pointing you in the right direction. The truth is, Jemma, you’re saving yourself.”

“But… what about you?” I managed to ask meekly.

“You’ve saved me in more ways than you can ever know.”

With that, he took me in his arms. An invisible jazz band—a piano, violin, trumpet, saxophone, and trombone—played from the stage as we danced the night away. Spinning and twirling beneath the lights which twinkled like stars.

I tried to slow down time. Tried to embrace every single micro moment we shared. Attempted to memorize every little line and angle of Jamie’s face, never moving my eyes away from his bright blue eyes.

I knew it then.

Even in this dreamlike state.

I knew our chapter was coming to a close.

Chapter Fifty-Seven

No Words

I slammed the car door shut and wrapped my hands around the steering wheel. The chill from the outside worked its way into my bones. My fingers raw. Eyes dry. A purple sky shot across the horizon, pink clouds drifting away with the setting sun. Beneath the clouds, a fading yellow sky disappeared into the newly forming midnight abyss.

A day had passed since Jamie and I had taken a shower in our clothes. A day since I had processed so many things. Holly had left this morning after her dad picked her up, and I’d spent the early afternoon staring at my computer. Two hours which resulted in a whopping total offivenew words.

Five.

Go team Jemma, am I right?
