“Wait,” Jamie asked. “You can… see me?”

“Uh…” She moved her gaze upward toward Jamie, crinkling her brows. I noticed an abrasion crossing over her left brow. “No offense, dude. But, uh, duh?”

“Duh?” I asked.

“Are you gonna tell me your name? I didn’t get to properly meet you the last time.” Holly asked, voice raspy.

She… didn’t get to properly meet him the last time? As in, back at my house? As in… the time with the coffee?

As in… she saw him?

As in… someone else can see him?

Holly held her hand out in his direction. “I’m Holly. Nice to meet you.”

“I’m… Jamie,” he said, pausing before accepting her gesture, watching me as he stuck his hand out toward her. Panic raced through me in anticipation. What would happen when she tried to touch him? Too bad I couldn’t hear Jamie’s thoughts. For the first time since he’d come to me, we couldn’t communicate incognito.

“Tell me about it,” Jamie said through gritted teeth.

“Tell you about what?” Holly asked.

“Uh, nothing,” Jamie said.

Holly pushed her hand against his, shaking it. For a split second, I worried her hand would go right through—wasn’t it only because Jamie was my soulmate that we could touch? Then again, he hadn’t quite explained the rules to me. In any case, from my angle anyway, they seemed to be able to touch as if Jamie was still in his body. Holly didn’t give off any funny facial expressions to indicate otherwise.

Jamie’s eyes remained wide.

“Cool handshake, bro,” Holly said, pulling away. “You’re, like, electric. I have a friend just like you. She’s totally cool.”

“Cool.” Jamie grinned first in her direction, then mine. He shifted back in his seat and leaned back, giving me a curious look.

Holly reached for her seatbelt and pulled it across her lap, clicking the belt in place.

“Hey, uh, aren’t you gonna wear yours?” Holly asked Jamie.

“Nah. I’m a rebel.” He smirked, crossing his arms in front of his chest. I shook my head as I put the car in drive, foot still on the brakes.

“Uh, where are we going, Holly?” I asked. “And… are you going to tell me what the hell happened to you?”

“Yeah, I’ll tell you,” she said.

“The truth this time?” I asked.

“The truth this time.” She sighed. “But, uh, I have one request.”

“What’s that?” I asked.

“Can we have this truth talk over pancakes? Pancakes always make everything a little better.” Her voice cracked, breaking into something more emotional than I’d ever heard from her before. From the rearview mirror, I could see her eyes well with tears.

“I make a mean pancake,” I said, not wanting to be out in public with Holly and mebothtalking to Jamie. Especially when Holly didn’t even seem to realize he was adeadguy.

Jamie glared at me at the dead guy comment. I smirked.

Sorry.

He gave me a thumbs down, but the smile on his face told me he wasn’t actually mad.

I added, “Why don’t we all go back to my place? That way you can tell me what’s going on. And who we have to send Jamie to beat up.”
