“You and Papa will never need anything from now on. I’ll be paying off your mortgage and anything you have outstanding. You’ll both happily accept the help.”

“That’s so nice,” she says softly. “You’ve always been a good boy.”

“You’ve always been great parents. I’m going to take over Neubrook and make it a wonderful place to live again. You and Papa will be highly respected in town, and if you ever have problems, I’ll take care of them. You just come to me.”

“We’ll just come to you.”

“There’s nothing to worry about with me. All my changes are for the good. I am happy.”

Her smile grows. “That’s all that matters.”

“I agree.”

She nods, and I wave the compulsion away. She blinks and exhales slowly, snapping out of it.

“Did you need water or lemonade?”

“I’m okay, Maman. I won’t be staying for dinner. Just getting over a stomach bug. Tell Papa I’m back and I’ll stop in later this week to say hello.”

“Okay, mon fil.”

I kiss her cheek, steeling myself as the sound of her blood pumping through her veins reaches my ears. It’s been too many hours since I’ve fed. I need to rectify that now.

After leaving, I slide into my sports car and head to the outskirts of town, where I know the worst of the drug users hang out. My maker suggested finding places like this for easy meals. Sure, there’s a very light buzz that comes with it, but nothing that would actually intoxicate a vampire, and the people forget easily since their reality is often blurred anyway.

I find an alley with two men sitting against a brick wall, shooting up, and pass them. Then I come across another alley. A man sits by himself, leaning against the wall with a dazed expression. Perfect.

I pull in, lowering the passenger side window. “Excuse me.”

The man jolts, turning his head sharply to face me before standing up and hobbling over. “Hey, man,” he says, leaning on the door. “You looking for action?”

“Even better. Get in.”

Without hesitation, he opens the door and jumps in. All in all, he’s not bad looking, with light brown hair, blue eyes, and a light beard. Judging by his clean clothes and reasonably groomed appearance, I’m assuming he isn’t homeless.

“What are you doing out here?” I ask.

He shrugs. “Gotta do what you gotta do, man. It’s twenty for a hand job. Thirty for a blow. I don’t do penetration.”

Chuckling, I nod. “Right to business, I see. What is your name?”

He studies my face for a second before answering. “Nate.”

“Well, Nate.” I lean close. “Do you actually want to do this with me?”

“You’re good looking.”

“That’s not what I asked.”

Nate shifts glances outside. “I just need some money, okay?” His voice is strained. Desperate. “I gotta pay somebody.”

“I see. Look at me.”

He does, jutting his chin out with false confidence.

“How much do you need?”

“Two hundred.”
