Shrugging, Victor’s fingers played with the condensation on his water glass. “I don’t know, honestly. I think everyone expected me to be so grateful someone like her was willing to marry me that I’d just look the other way.”

“Jesus Christ,” Oliver breathed.

Victor shot him a wry grin. “Yeah. But apparently, I don’t think like everyone else around me.”

“Thank fuck,” Oliver said.

Victor’s grin softened into something like a playful smirk. “And anyway, if I had forgiven her, I wouldn’t have met you, would I? And then what kind of honeymoon would I be having?”

Oliver had no idea what to say to that, but he was resolved right then to give Victor the best fucking night of his life.

Chapter5

“This isn’t ever comingoff, is it?”

Oliver looked over at Victor, who was still picking at the bits of sauce in his nail beds, and fought back a laugh. “Just a couple more washes, I promise.”

“Awarningmight have been nice.”

“I did warn you!” Oliver defended. “And you said you wanted to get messy.”

Victor scowled at him. “I didn’t think it was going to be permanent. I like being clean.”

“Oh, well…” Since they were in the elevator, Oliver didn’t hold back as he slid into Victor’s personal space and used his thumb to swipe a bit of buffalo sauce from the corner of his lips and dropped his voice low. “I should probably help you with this.”

Victor inhaled sharply, his eyes going wide. “How…how long has that been there?” His words were soft and breathless.

Oliver grinned shamelessly as he stepped back and shrugged. “Since your first hot wing.”

Victor’s scowl returned. “Fantastic.”

“I promised you a mess,” Oliver said, spreading his arms, “and I delivered. And it really does come off. You just need a little patience.”

A smile played at the edges of Victor’s mouth before his face erupted into a grin, and he chuckled as the elevator came to a stop. He was still laughing quietly as they moved into the corridor, which wasn’t empty but nearly as crowded as the main floors of the arena.

Oliver bit his lip to hide his smile as Victor stared down at a sauce stain on his shirt. “Let’s just call it a fashion statement.”

Victor snorted and shook his head as he offered the crook of his elbow. When Oliver hesitated, he raised his brow. “Isn’t this what people do?” he asked, throwing Oliver’s words back at him.

Oliver hated himself. He started it, but it was starting to feel like an actual date, and worst of all, Oliver was into it. He was into Victor, and the messy hot wings, and his stained shirt, and a dumb hockey game.

And right now, he was into the little swooping feeling he got when he tugged on Victor’s arm and led him into the top-floor gift shop where the expensive jerseys all hung on the walls.

“You’re actually serious about buying a new shirt,” Victor said as he eyed all the black and gold.

“Yes, honey. You can’t show up to meetGabriel Moraleslooking like that, you fucking slob,” Oliver chastised, waving his hand at Victor’s shirt.

Victor looked completely affronted. “You said it was fine. You said everyone gets messy!”

He laughed and tugged him toward a table with some artfully done button-ups with the team logo. “Fine for me, love. Not for one of the hottest, richest men on this side of the country.” He gently squeezed Victor’s hand and met his dark gaze. “Come on,” he said very softly, “I’m not going to make you look terrible.”

Victor hesitated, then squeezed Oliver’s hand back. “Fine. I trust you.” Those words hit Oliver directly in the chest, and he ignored them in favor of letting Victor lead the way to a row of the home team jerseys. Oliver said nothing as Victor sorted through them, and eventually, he held one up to his body. It was a little more formfitting than the standard ones, and Oliver didn’t want to imagine what it would look like on him because it wasn’t fair.

“Terrible?”

“Nope. Hot as fuck,” Oliver answered, unable to be dishonest.

Victor’s ears went a little pink, and Oliver turned his attention to another rack of T-shirts because the blush was doing things to him. “You don’t have to do that,” Victor muttered.
