Oliver’s brow furrowed. “See what? What the fuck are you laughing at?”

“Your car,” Victor said. “Jesus, I…this car changed my entire life, Oliver. I think I’m having a moment.”

Oliver thwapped him on the arm with the back of his hand. “You asshole. I thought you were freaking out on me, or…” He trailed off because in all honesty, he had no idea what he thought Victor was thinking or feeling.

Victor softened immediately, and he shook his head. “I’m sorry. I didn’t expect to feel so strongly.”

Oliver could understand that. More than he wanted to admit, actually, though at least Victor would get it. He took a breath, then jerked his chin toward the car and unlocked it before sliding behind the wheel. He drummed his fingers on his thigh nervously as Victor stowed his crutches in the back, and he did his best not to watch him as he climbed into the passenger seat and shut the door.

The silence between them was heavy and profound, interrupted only by their breathing and the fact that Oliver could hear his own heartbeat in his ears. He swallowed thickly, then turned to look at Victor.

“Can I—”

“Yes.”

Oliver laughed and shook his head. “You don’t know what I was going to ask.”

“It doesn’t matter. The answer’s always going to be yes.”

“Buy a rocket and build me a secret moon base,” Oliver said.

Victor’s grin widened. “Yes.”

“Take over Europe.”

Victor laughed. “Yes.”

“Take over Australia.”

Victor’s eyes crinkled in the corners. “I hate spiders, but yes.”

Oliver’s heart was threatening to grow too big for his chest to contain. His lungs felt a little tight. “Make me a promise.”

Victor’s voice dropped to a near whisper. “Yes.”

“Promise I won’t wake up tomorrow and find out this was all some sort of stress-based fever dream.”

Victor shifted in his seat, turning to face Oliver better. His hand lifted, drifting in the space between them almost like he was afraid, and then his warm, calloused palm cupped Oliver’s cheek, and he leaned in.

“Yes.”

The word was barely a rush of air, caressing Oliver’s cheeks, and his eyes closed as the space between them diminished as much as it could in his small car.

Victor’s kiss was gentle yet searing hot. It was a silent vow—like the gesture itself could seal his words and make them part of the canon that told the story of their lives. Yes, yes, and yes again—it said, and Oliver drank it in until he couldn’t breathe and was forced to break away.

He knocked his forehead against Victor’s and kept his eyes closed like he was afraid to look. “We should go.”

Victor hummed. “The traffic will be even worse if we linger anymore.”

Oliver smiled and reached for Victor’s hand and laughed when he found Victor seeking his touch in the exact same way.

Chapter21

The drive had been hellish,Victor’s car eating up long hours on the freeway until he saw the signs for Sol Azur in the distance. And even then, he didn’t feel better. He was going to see Oliver for the first time in what felt like an actual eternity, and he still had no idea what was going to come after.

Was this just a gesture? Or was it Oliver changing his mind?

What if it was neither?
