James looked up from his stack of papers, signing them with his fingers with precision. It convinced her further that he could do anything he had tasked her to do with his magic.

“Yes. Thank you for organizing my main file room. I can find things easier now and rely on those magical notes you made. They are quite useful.”

“They are. We use them all the time in our old shop. Was there anything else you needed me to do?”

Despite her relief that he hadn’t pointed out her use of magic as a shortcut, she braced herself for the next task and a night filled with work.

“Yes. I need you to get out of here.”

“What?”

“To enjoy the rest of the night. And the weekend. You can come back on Monday.”

Her eyes widened, noting his sincerity. “Thank you. I shall do that, then.”

She glanced around the office building, waiting for Maddox to pop up out of nowhere and announce that he had a free night, too. But Pearl was in the building’s doorway before she could actively search for him, holding a paper bag.

“Hey, hardworking sis. I got you dinner and an excuse to rest your busy ass.”

Ruby smiled, already smelling the roasted potatoes. “We can have it outside. Or we can order somewhere. I’m free tonight. James dismissed me.”

That perked Pearl up, who took her hand and pulled her out, just as convinced as Ruby was that James would change his mind. They relaxed when the building was out of their sight, strolling until Pearl cleared her throat and Ruby knew what was coming next.

“So, what’s new with you?”

“Nothing,” Ruby replied fast. Too fast. As expected, Pearl had latched on to it and narrowed her gaze.

“You hag. Who were you messing around with in Magoo’s office? And before you say no one, I heard you loud and clear.”

Hearing the words out had her blushing terribly, but it also tightened her belly when she remembered just how loud they had been. She shook her head.

“I would rather not say.”

“Was it Brian?” Pearl persisted. “Because I know he is interested in you and wants to date you. But it couldn’t be Brian. The man’s not that wild, and the sound that man with you made was crazy wild, indicating you weren’t having some gentle sex stuff in there.”

Images played in her head, turning her on before she could stop it. She bit her tongue and shrugged.

“Hmm.”

“You little shit. You really aren’t going to tell me, are you?”

“Be careful with that mouth,” Ruby teased, diverting the topic. “You are going to get on Emerald’s nerves again, and she will be pouncing.”

But her sister brushed her off. “Oh, she is just another person who needs to get laid. That’s not happening soon with this righteous phase she has going on, butyou…this is good for you. I’m glad that this stupid island’s judgment isn’t getting to you and that you are having fun. I know I scolded you, too, but only because I don’t want to hear the others making fun of you again.”

Ruby stared, touched at the admission. “Thank you. I don’t want them making fun of you, either.”

“As if. I will make fun of them first.” Pearl smirked. “Anyway, I was so sure that you would be miserable for the rest of our existence here, so it’s great that you are proving me wrong in the best—and sexiest—way possible.”

“Hmm.”

“Are youstillnot going to share?”

Ruby’s lips quirked. “Nope.”

“That’s fine. I will find out.”

To her relief, the declaration was the end of that particular conversation, until they were back at their favorite bar and had ordered their favorite food items. Pearl prioritized the drinks, as usual, sliding an extra-large glass to her.
