“Oh.”

“Besides, that’s not the only reason. The feelings are…complicated. Especially for him. He lost someone dear.”

Silence.

“Ruby?”

“What?”

“Coming from someone who knows exactly how these things go…just be careful, okay?”

There it was again, the sincerity shining from Pearl’s devil-may-care attitude. Ruby smiled and patted the hand on her knee.

“Don’t be so dramatic, sis. I’m always careful.”

“Use protection.”

“There is magic for that.”

“If he hurts you, you come to me. I will break every bone in his body.”

“What did I say about being dramatic?”

Pearl giggled. “Fine. I will stop, I won’t say a word, and all that shit. Keep it simple, sis. End it when it’s time to end it.”

Ruby toasted to that, ignoring the way her heart shriveled at the last part.

The bar became full and raucous when more patrons came in and more drinks were served, but she and Maddox always seemed to spot each other in the crowd. Drawn like magnets, they stopped resisting and snuck to the back, with her waiting first. She lit up when he finally arrived in the powder room, closed the door, and devoured her with his gaze.

“Hey. I didn’t see you all day—”

He devoured her with his mouth next, her words melting into non-existence as Maddox poured every amount of desire he had into the kiss. Ruby clung to him and rubbed against him, delighting when he grew hard—harder—and wishing they were somewhere more private. Inside her, her magic responded…then dissipated when his thumb found her and thoroughly stroked over her panties.

“I missed you,” he said, voice a low scrape against her ear.

“We see each other every day, but I get that.” She laughed. He took that laugh with another kiss until her brain was mush. Perhaps it was why she didn’t hear the door until it was too late, and her sister’s voice was hissing in the small space.

“Amateurs! Lock the goddamn door.”

Maddox ended the kiss first, much to her dismay. She licked her lips, watched his gaze burn at the movement, and turned to Pearl.

“Can you lock the door for us?”

Pearl’s mouth dropped open. Then the brunette stalked over and grabbed her hand.

“Oh, hell no. You are celebrating Friday night with me. You guys can do that at your time, not on girl’s night.”

“Pearl—”

“Any protests?” Pearl asked, ignoring her and directing his question at Maddox.

His lips pressed together as he visibly tried not to laugh. He shook his head.

“No. Have fun, guys.”

Ruby glowered at him, then reluctantly went with her persistent sister until they were back in the crowd.

“Cockblock,” Ruby muttered.
