“Fighting lessons?”

“Sure. I can teach you how to pound.”

“Or how to thrust a…sword.”

“Or how to hit repeatedly until the other party screams.”

They collapsed in laughter at the double innuendos, then threw out some more when they just kept coming. She went with him when he invited her to the shower, then ended up soaping more than her body and clinging to him when he initiated another round of that pounding and screaming. Ruby felt that nothing could have been more perfect and was happy that this was their life now—until a massive sound erupted outside.

The shower shook. So did the house, leaving the big furniture intact but throwing the small ones to the ground. They got dressed quickly and ignored them, beelining their way to the front door where they spotted two concerning things.

“Saph. Silver,” she gasped, zoning in on the main council building. The building itself was out of their sight, but the glow emitting from it was visible as it spread to the sky.

“Moon,” he mused, pointing in another direction where Kira’s family lived. Again, they couldn’t see anything but the smoke coming up, heavy and dark.

The two looked at each other.

“We split up,” she said reluctantly.

He nodded and didn’t say a word, understanding where they each needed to go. She turned to go but was pulled back when his hand wrapped around her wrist, and he kissed her one more time.

“Come back to me,” he murmured.

Ruby smiled and willed for good news.

“Of course.”

The checkup lasted a while, mostly because Ruby didn’t expect what she would find and the crowd that had already gathered when she got there. Then things got even more serious when she was invited to join the meeting and had to participate in the private, closed-off discussions, along with her sisters. By the time it was done, she was antsy to just get out of there, ducking the questions from lingering watchers and even throwing Pearl to face a persistent witch that blocked their way.

Pearl shot her a glare. Ruby grinned and waved air kisses, then ran off as fast as she could. She didn’t get far as another body blocked her way, but this one was familiar and had her jumping him instantly. He hugged her back just as fast.

“Hey, you,” she greeted, the worry over his safety seeping out of her tense body.

“Hey. You were in there for a while. Is everything okay?”

“Yes. They declared it safe the moment I arrived there.”

“I know. I heard. Some false alarm.”

“Hmm. Is Moon okay?”

Relief swept through her at his nod.

“Yes,” he said. “You were right. He was with Kira. I think she likes him. But her parents were taken aback when she took him to her house and they attacked him by accident…hence all the smoke. They ended up burning their garden, and it spread quite a bit before they could put it out.”

“Accident?”

“Yes. They tried making excuses after, but the witnesses rallied around Moon until her parents apologized.”

That warmed her heart, solidifying that they had more people on their side now. But she still grimaced. “Hmm. I know her parents. I can’t say I’m a fan of them. I suppose she is nice enough, but I’m not sure about them hanging out.”

“Well, we are not his parents. That’s his decision.”

Ruby pouted. “I don’t know, Mad. It kind of feels like we are.”

“He will be grown up soon. He will thrive here.” Maddox grinned. “Meanwhile, we can make our own. As many as we want, and as long as we want.”

“The Hendricks brood. Or the Hendricks-Sutton brood.”
