“Not against magic.” He didn’t argue. Realizing he wasn’t actively looking for a fight, she willed herself to relax too. “And don’t tell me you have impenetrable lungs.”

Humor glissaded in his eyes, changing them.

“I would have broken my way out eventually. I would have…you’re bleeding.”

Before it could register, she was pulled forward as his hand yanked hers and he examined the slash on her palm. She tried to hide the crusted blood on her knuckles, but Klaus was already twisting her hand.

“It’s fine,” she assured.

“Let me get some medicine.”

His thumb brushed her slice, shockingly gentle—a direct contrast to his demanding tone. Her belly tightened as heat rushed, and alarm had her forcefully jerking her hand from his grasp.

“I’m fine,” she hissed, trying not to panic again. The brief contact was…odd. “I have some healing balms. I’ll get to it later.”

“Later?”

“Later. It’s not that serious.”

Her guard went up when his worry shifted to speculation…again. He tilted his head.

“So, let me get this straight. You and your sisters—and your brother—can easily hold me at will but you can’t defeat that man on your own…a defector, which means you have more experience in your years living on Broom’s Isle.”

“He’s powerful,” she replied carefully. “He could have picked up black magic over the years.”

Ruby is our most powerful, followed by Emerald and Pearl. Silver’s the first if we’re counting him too.

But she didn’t say all of this, refusing to reveal the terrible secret that she had kept most of her life.

“I see.”

“Besides, I got him in the end, didn’t I? That’s what matters.”

“I guess.”

He was still actively scrutinizing her and was perhaps closer to the truth than she would have liked. Shaken, she stepped back.

“I need a place. Somewhere to recuperate where I won’t be disturbed.”

Sapphire braced for more questions and a confrontation. Instead, he nodded.

“Pick a room. My castle has plenty of empty ones. What do you need?”

Potion materials. A table. A lock you can’t pick.

“Any room will do. I’ll take my pick as you said.”

“Hmm.”

Curiosity roused when he turned, spreading his wings again.

“Where are you going?”

“I’m off to see the ship,” was his curt reply, but he paused to regard her. “And don’t worry. I won’t let them see me and break your spell.”

He flew off before she could protest, his body staying in human form. She watched, unable to help it, as his gracefulness and power still shone through despite his subdued state—like an angel of death from the books she had read, except she knew he was no angel. When he disappeared in the clouds, she turned and hurried back to the castle, her thoughts tumbling a mile a minute.

Sapphire was the eldest female and was supposed to be one of the most powerful in their family line if they were to go by natural biology. That she was the weakest link was something she had been aware of since she was a kid, even when none of her family members discussed it out loud. There was, however, one thing she was good at: potions, a blessing that allowed her to fill up what she was lacking and catch up to her siblings. Sometimes, she even surpassed them. For the most part, her natural magic and potion magic blended well and made things work…hiding her vulnerability.
