“A reasonable want that doesn’t involve dissolving the pact.”

She paused, trying to gather her bearings.

“I want you to concede to supervision.”

He paused, too, brows furrowing.

“That’s it?”

Sapphire nodded. “For now.”

“So, all this fight and tussle just for that?”

“You started it when you wouldn’t take no for an answer,” she reminded.

Klaus scoffed. “It’s ridiculous. And it’s not that serious.”

“It is to me.”

Silence.

“Fine. Lunch it is. Lunch whether you’re there or not.”

“I’ll be there. For dinner, too, and for every other visit you plan.”

He scoffed again. “Surely you won’t be there all the time.”

That brand of cockiness set her chin lifting again.

“Watch me.”

He didn’t answer, even while he scrutinized her again. She noted his bewilderment as he tried to figure her out, then gave up. The edge in his expression relaxed.

“How’s your hand?”

“What?” Belatedly, it dawned that he no longer held her hands in place and they were free to move. But his thumb was on her palm, grazing carefully. “Oh. It’s…no longer bleeding.”

The grazing went on and on as if to check for himself that they were indeed not bleeding. She let him, the fight inside her drained out. Tingles rose, tickling where his skin touched hers and…odd. His touch softened.

“Good. That’s good. Sapphire?”

“What?”

“You can challenge me all you want. But you will find out that I always have my way.”

Her gaze flew up. Again, she didn’t realize how close his face had gotten, just inches away from hers. The carefulness of his touch matched his expression, so she willed herself to mirror it.

“Then you haven’t met your match yet.”

“Maybe. Maybe not.” His thumb pressed into where her wound would have been, now clear. A searing heat scurried in and had her biting back a sound while his voice remained casual, unfazed at the breath they shared between them. “I’ll see you for lunch, Sapphire.”

With a nod, Klaus let her hand go and walked away, picking up the gift box he had dropped earlier. She gaped at his broad back, at the shifting muscles…at him, trying to make sense of her reaction.

It was the lack of sleep. The tingles running around in her body had to be from the lack of sleep and nothing else because there was no way in heavens that she found his touch anything but abhorrent. Bodies could be traitors, especially when tired. When she woke up with a clearer head, the two known truths would remain: that she found him as unlikeable as always and he was a bad match to her sister—and her plan of delaying their unity until she could find a solution was still in gear.

Sapphire closed her eyes. Then she pushed off the magic sheen, waved it away, and marched to her room, willing herself to forget this day’s existence.
