“Such as?”

“You being Klaus of Oslo. Having you as an ally instead of an enemy is already a win for us.”

“Even if it means siding with a rumored murderer?”

“I’m assuming you wouldn’t go on a murder spree with a witch on your side, being your good conscience. You seem to have more sense than that. If you didn’t, you wouldn’t have agreed to my deal.”

But that wasn’t all, he realized, as he noted the guardedness she tried to hide.

“Does your sister know?”

Green eyes flicked to him, aware that he wasn’t talking about what she said. He waited for her reasons, but her guardedness dropped and her features turned cheerful.

“My sister doesn’t have to know everything about my life, especially my relationships.”

What relationship? He wanted to ask, mystified. But he was beginning to see that Emerald had her boundaries that couldn’t be crossed. In turn, she wouldn’t cross his, fulfilling her role without asking too many questions or delving deep into his secrets. She was becoming an even more perfect candidate as time went on, and he could envision their future together: her in the castle taking care of his children and him in his cave, their affairs separate unless they needed to show unity. It would be peaceful, albeit boring, but he had enough adventures and troubles outside of Oslo.

“I see,” he finally said. “Then perhaps we can hasten the ritual process so we can get mated right away. For both our sakes.”

Emerald opened her mouth. Someone cleared their throat, interrupting her. His body tensed, attuned to the sound even before he saw anything. He looked around until he spotted the figure.

There was Sapphire, marching toward him like she was ready to kick him in the nuts or punch him in the face. There was so much temper there, so carefully restrained, but bits of it were already shining with that passion and determination. His gut tightened. His hands itched again, this time to grab her over his shoulder and take her away, where he would have the privacy to counter every single one of her arguments. Anticipation lit up to match her word for word, to show that he could give as good as he got. He would fan that spirit of hers to greater heights until she was a raging mass, uncontrollable. Then he would shut her up with his mouth on hers, his hands on hers and—

Stop that.

An image formed of Sapphire in his bed, flat on her back and fiery eyes burning him. But her legs would spread for him, and those eyes would smolder the moment he drove his cock into the hilt. That mouth would part open, ripe for the taking, and those tits would arch, inviting his mouth to—

Stop. Stop.

Pleasure riddled him inside out. He jerked away from the visceral imagery and found himself staring at the real Sapphire, who now stopped in front of him.

“You went behind my back.”

“Did I?”

His casual, silky answer had her bristling.

“We agreed on supervised visits.”

“Supervised lunches and dinners, yes.”

“All interactions, you cheat.”

“Well, you’re here now,” he shot back. “Like a hound to a trail.”

“And you’re a jerk of the highest proportions—”

“Stop it, you two.”

The steel in Emerald’s tone was so uncommon that they stopped talking immediately and turned to her. The blonde, willowy woman was still standing beside him, her pleasant expression marred with a slight frown. She looked at Sapphire first.

“He had a lovely gift, Saph. And I went willingly to his garden walk invitation.”

Sapphire blinked. “But…”

“And I’m happy with him,” Emerald continued, visibly hitting Sapphire with the biggest shock of her life. “I like him.”

“You do?”
