“You were seducing him.”

Her spine snapped and her glower intensified.

“We were talking.”

“I know flirting when I see it. You’re going to confuse and hurt the poor boy.”

“He’s not a boy,” she corrected. “He’s a man.”

“He’s not man enough to handle you.”

“Handle me? What’s that supposed to mean?”

“It means you will run him over with your bullheadedness and your inability to rein in your temper.”

“Look who’s talking about bullheadedness and temper. You’re crude as always and bossy to boot.”

“You’re a headache,” he declared.

Hurt flared, but she tried not to let it show. Coldness closed in on her, so she imitated Emerald’s signature icy look.

“Don’t worry about it. I’ll be gone in a few days, and you never have to see me again.”

Klaus paused, turning silent. The temper in his features dissipated and she glimpsed a hint of regret.

“Saph—”

“Miko’s going with me.”

Just like that, the regret was gone. His voice turned silky—hissignature before he pounced.

“Is he?”

Get out. Don’t trigger him. Just leave.

But she was no longer listening to her conscience, too riled up.

“Yes. It’s going to be a dangerous journey, so we agreed to sleep in the same tent.”

A low growl came from his throat.

“Cancel it.”

“No.”

“No?” he echoed.

She was sure that if those human nostrils could blaze fire, they would. Triumph blazed that she could get under his skin too.

“No. I’ll do what I want. You can do what you want in your lane. Stay out of mine.”

“To hell with that.”

“To hell with you. What now? Are you going to insult me some more? Manhandle me? Oh, so youaregoing to manhandle me.” She sputtered when he took her elbow firmly. She yanked it off, then sputtered some more when he wouldn’t budge, his hold like a steel clamp oddly bereft of pain. “You idiot. You brutish, egotistical jerk. Let me go.”

“No.”

“Go back to your goddamn ritual,” she snapped, then got angry again when the image of him and her sister laughing their hearts out brought an ache to her chest. “I swear to heavens, Klaus, if you don’t let me go this second—”
