“I brought you here to pick a fight with you.”

“Because apparently, I couldn’t talk to Miko without you thinking it was flirting. Besides, I could flirt with him all I wanted—”

“You don’t get to say that after you responded in my hands the way you did, Sapphire.”

Her breath hitched and her body ignited. Emerald clearing her throat brought them out of their little bubble, even while Klaus wouldn’t stop glaring at her.

“Em, I’m sorry,” Sapphire said. But Emerald only shook her head.

“There’s no need for apologies. We’re not yet mated and don’t share feelings for each other.”

“But—”

“No apologies, Saph,” Emerald repeated, examining her. “Let’s all talk about this like grown adults.”

The logical approach was so Emerald’s that Sapphire had no choice but to believe she truly wasn’t hurt. She gulped down her guilt and nodded, then glanced at Klaus.

“I’m sorry too. None of that was intentional. And she’s right. Let’s discuss.”

Klaus remained silent. Emerald took it as her cue.

“When I said the deal’s off, I meant yours and mine, Klaus. The pact, however, stays intact as you didn’t hurt me with your actions. In turn, we are not breaking the pact.”

His voice was steel. “Explain.”

“The pact says a Sutton must pay Rosa’s debt and fulfill your demands for a bride and witch ally.” A pause. “You can marry my sister.”

It felt like a bomb was dropped beneath Sapphire, flinging her world inside out.

“What?” she asked.

“Keep talking,” Klaus demanded.

“What?” Sapphire shook her head. “Wait, stop. That’s not—”

“I said to keep talking,” he snapped.

Emerald was unfazed, looking him in the eye. “Sapphire is a Sutton. She’s part of the pact. There’s chemistry between you, something that’s sorely lacking between us. Don’t deny it.”

“I won’t. It’s there.”

“She’s the ideal bride,” Emerald continued. “As the second eldest female, I can be head of the Sutton household and she can rest from her responsibilities. I’m capable enough. And unlike her, I’m not opposed to you being with her, especially after spending time here and seeing how you run things.”

Stupefaction hit Sapphire hard, robbing her of speech. Klaus didn’t speak for a long time, either, equally lost in ruminations and struggling to absorb Emerald’s words. Then he finally spoke, but the words weren’t what she expected.

“We’ll kill each other.”

“There’s nothing to kill because it’s not happening,” she corrected. “Absolutely not. Klaus, you can’t marry me.”

But it was clear that he had latched on to the idea, his face displaying consideration instead of anger this time. He tilted his head.

“Emerald refused. Am I to assume I will take Pearl, then?”

“Not Pearl, either.”

“Take your pick, Sapphire. It has to be one. And unless you want to give me one of your unwilling sisters, then it has to be you.”

Sheer frustration rose, making it hard to think. She turned back to Emerald.
