Ryland had to leave his house before he kissed his mate again. She was under the Blood Moon Agency's protection, and he couldn’t paw her. Not when he had zero desire to keep her in his life for very long.

As soon as the murders were solved and the vases were found, he would send her packing.

There was no space in his life for a woman, and certainly not one that went from hating him to kissing him in a matter of seconds. Caroline was going to make him insane.

“I need to go into the office for a bit,” he lied. “This building is as secure as it can be, but just in case, I’ll get one of the guards to watch the entrance. Don’t leave. Don’t answer the door to anyone. Got it?”

“You’re really going to leave? We need to start putting the case together.”

“There’s something I need to do. Trust me when I say it’s for the benefit of the case.”

She narrowed her eyes at him in disbelief. Ryland wasn’t exactly a good liar, but he could usually fib his way out of uncomfortable situations.

Not with Caroline.

Her eyes saw right through his bullshit.

He could hardly tell her that he was a wolf shifter and he needed to go for a run if he was going to spend any more time with her. She would probably panic and never speak to him again.

Never kiss him again.

“Fine. Then take me with you,” Caroline crossed her arms.

“Not here. It’s not safe.”

She shook her head. “You’re really going to leave me alone? Again? I snooped when you left earlier. I didn’t find anything, but I could this time.”

He slapped his knee with a laugh. “You can snoop all you want, love.”

He left before she could respond.

On the elevator ride down to the lobby, Ryland texted Mel. She wasthebest BMA agent, and she’d only just recently helped Axton, his cousin, and Canaan withtheirmates. Mel was discreet and a total badass.

Ryland: Keep an eye on my building. Important client in my apartment. Been threatened.

Mel: On it.

He grinned down at her reply. Mel never asked for more details or more information. She knew it wasn’t her business, and she kept her nose clean.

With his mate in Mel’s hands, he didn’t feel too guilty leaving the city for a run. He needed it. Not as much as he needed another kiss from Caroline, but it was pretty damn close, and there was only one of those two things he could control.

A little while later, Ryland was done with his run. He felt better after shifting into his white wolf and running around the woods for a while. All he needed to do now was carry that peace inside himself when he was around Caroline.

His phone dinged, and he quickly checked it, half expecting it to be from Mel.

Caroline: Were you expecting a visitor?

The bottom of his stomach dropped. No one visited his place. No one except his mother. He quickly tapped out a reply.

Ryland: Fuck no. Don’t answer the door. No matter what you do, DO. NOT. ANSWER. THE. DOOR.

Caroline: Stop shouting at me.

Ryland kept on sending her texts, but she didn’t answer a single one.

It wasn’t until he got a text from Mel, saying that his mother was at his place, that he knew … beyond the shadow of a doubt … that he was well and truly fucked.
