Fuck. How embarrassing.

“I’m sorry if we gave you the wrong impression, Mrs. Wolverton,” Caroline said. “We’re not a couple, but your son here has graciously agreed to help me with my current project.”

Mom clapped her hands together. “Isn’t that just wonderful! I bet you’re over the moon, Ryland.”

“I’m over something,” he grumbled.

“What is the case?”

“It’s got a bit of something for everyone. Murders. Thefts. Missing ancient artifacts. Immortality.”

“Oh! How very exciting. Iamsad that you’re not an item.Yet. But who knows what can happen between now and …” she waved a hand, “and whenever this project ends. You will join us for dinner tomorrow,” Mom insisted.

“Mom,” he warned. “No. That’s not a good idea.”

“Why ever not? You’re partners, aren’t you? And don’t forget that you work for Blood Moon Agency. This is a great partnership for our company. You’ll come for dinner,” she declared before standing. Mom gave himthelook. The one she gave when she grounded him as a kid, and Ryland knew it was futile to argue. Her mind was made up.

“If Caroline wants, she can. I’m not her keeper,” he said as if he didn’t care. As if the very thought bored him.

“I’d love to join you for dinner,” Caroline responded, also coming to her feet.

Ryland was shocked. Again. He had hoped she would decline the invitation, but she was grinning at him extra wide instead.

“Excellent. See you then.” Mom blew him an air kiss, and just like that, she was gone.

Caroline sat back on the couch, crossing her arms. Her smirk widened to a full smile. “So,” she said in a teasing tone. “Your mother tells me that you’re a big fan of mine.”

“My mother exaggerates. As you can see, she has a flair for the dramatic.”

“Are you embarrassed that you like my show?”

“No.”

“Then why didn’t you tell me?”

“I don’t know,” he answered truthfully.

“Does it have anything to do with that locked room? Are you so obsessed with me that you have a wall plastered with my face in there? Or,” she shouted animatedly. “Or, you have your own sound booth in there, and you’re recording a show aboutmyshow. About what a big fan you are.”

“You’re insane,” he grumbled.

“I’m hilarious,” she countered. “So, whatisin that room?”

“None of your business, but I promise you that itisn’ta room full of your face.”

She giggled. “Yeah, I’m gonna need proof of that.”

“Like hell. Now, if you are done teasing me, would you like to know what I found out?”

“About the vase?” she asked, sobering.

He nodded. “The family was supposed to give two vases to the museum, but on the day of the delivery, there was only the one.”

Her eyes went wide. “We need to meet with that family,” she gasped.

He grinned and sipped his drink. “That’s exactly what I was thinking.”

Isn’t it great how in sync you are with her, his wolf asked. That’s because she’s our mate. Any second now, you should tell her what she is to you. To us. I’m sure she won’t mind. She might even find it fun. She’s adventurous.
