“I wasn’t sure you would be honest. You’re not being honest about your loan or your producer.”

“How could you possibly know that?”

He tapped his nose. His shifter senses were clear enough, but he replied, “I have a knack for knowing the truth.”

“Well, well,” she mumbled. “Maybe you’ll hear the truth in this. You’re too close, and I need some space.”

Every word out of Caroline’s mouth was a lie.

He grinned as the realization mixed with his own desire for her. “Yeah? I don’t think so.” He gently placed his hand on the back of her neck. His fingers kneaded her shoulder before digging into her thick, lush hair.

A small moan escaped her, but she put on a good show and continued typing. It was all gibberish that he saw her typing on her screen. He leaned closer to her and only stopped when his lips could brush against her ear. “I can tell, Caroline.”

“What’s that?” she asked, breathless.

“I can tell how much you want me.”

With a gasp, she turned to glare at him. The second their gazes met, Rylandknew.

They sat there, both breathing hard, staring at each other. He continued to brush his fingers through her hair, relishing in the silky slide of her strands.

Caroline pushed her laptop away and closed the distance between them. She didn’t stop until her lips were pressed to his. Their position on the couch was all too uncomfortable. Ryland took her in his arms and placed Caroline on his lap.

In this new position, she straddled him, one leg on either side of his. Her mouth never left his, even as his tongue invaded her mouth with quick swipes. He wanted to taste every inch of her, but this was the best he could manage.

He couldn’t allow himself more.

If he did, he would never let her walk away. He wouldn’t know how.

“Ryland,” she gasped against his mouth. She quickly retreated to the other side of the couch, her hand on her mouth. “You need to stop doing that.”

He chuckled with little humor. His cock was straining with pain in his jeans. “Me? You’re the one who trapped me.”

“Only because you put me there.” Her cheeks were flushed, and her breathing was ragged. She shook her head and gulped deep breaths. “It doesn’t matter. We need to stop doing that,” she repeated unconvincingly.

“If you want.”

“Yes. I do want. No more.”

He licked his lips and shrugged.

She tried to glare at him, unsuccessfully. “I bet I’m not even the first woman you’ve tried to seduce on an international flight. How often do you use the private plane to seduce women?”

“I run the international crime unit,” he replied. “I only use this for work. More often than I would like, also. But it beats waiting for a flight when everything in the air gets canceled due to overbooking.”

“Well, sure. Why would you have to wait like the rest of us?”

He grinned. “When lives hang in the balance?”

She chuckled dryly. “Oh, right. I forgot that you’re actually important. You don’t usually spend your days making me insane or locked in that other room in your apartment, staring at my face. Listening to my voice.”

Ryland wanted to point out that he knew what she was doing. She was pushing him away with words even as her body begged him to take her. Soon, neither one would be able to resist. He didn’t know if he should be grateful or fearful for that moment.

“This is gonna be a long flight,” he grumbled.

There wasn’t enough scotch in the world to take away the sting of Caroline’s kiss.
