“Even if I had, it wouldn’t matter,” he stalked off without another word as Caroline left the room right behind the doctor.

“And?” Ryland asked.

“I’m fine, just like I thought.”

The doctor opened his mouth to say something, but after a withering glare from Caroline, the man snapped his mouth shut and went into the next patient’s room.

“What was that all about? Are you not okay, Caroline? You’ve got to tell me the truth.”

“Idid. I’m fine. Salvatore will be okay too. His family is already on their way here from Rome. They’re a bit shocked that he made it all the way to Paris. They’ll have questions.”

“Wilder is going to stay and answer every question he can. He’ll also help them get back home.”

“Shouldn’t we stay? Help?”

“We still need to finish this. If you’re up for it.”

“Of course, I’m up for it.”

“I was hoping you wouldn’t say that,” he grumbled. “You were just held captive for almost fifteen hours.”

“You said it was fourteen.”

“It felt like fifteen. It felt like a lot more than that, actually.”

“At least the lynxes weren’t the murderers,” she pointed out. “But I think the disappearing vases made them nervous.”

“I agree. The lynxes wanted the vases for themselves, and when someone started killing the owners, they wanted to put a stop to it.”

“Enter me. Looking for the killer. They might’ve thought I was looking for the vases too.”

Ryland nodded. “That’s actually not a bad point. If only we knew who Laurent La Forest was working with.”

Caroline took a deep breath and closed her eyes. “We’ll figure it out once we get out of here,” she laughed nervously. “I’m not a fan of hospitals.”

Ryland held her again. “Whatever you want, love. But, just so that you know, I am never leaving your side again.”

“Pretty sure I need a shower. You’ll have to leave my side for that.”

“And you’re nuts if you don’t think I’ll be joining you,” he whispered against her hair.

Now, all he had to do was solve the murders and … most importantly … get his mate to fall in love with him.

TWENTY-EIGHT

CAROLINE

Caroline wasn’t surprised that she was back in the air. Ryland wanted her to be at home where she was comfortable and safe … away from the lynxes.

Though Wilder was working with the local authorities to charge each pack member with the appropriate charges, Ryland didn’t want Caroline anywhere near all that. It wasn’t her fight, apparently.

But therewassomething she had to do. They needed to have a serious talk.

She needed to come clean about this podcast story. Yet, every time she tried to broach a conversation with Ryland, he shushed her and laid her head on his chest. “You’ve just been kidnapped, love. Take a moment to rest.”

“I don’t want to rest,” she argued. “I need to tell you something.”

Ryland tensed. “What is it?”
