“You’re mine,” he whispered in her ear. “That means you’re coming home with me.”

Caroline didn’t argue. There was nowhere else she’d rather be.

TWENTY-NINE

CAROLINE

Once Joan was led away by the Blood Moon Agency agents, Caroline wanted to go straight home to tell her brother the good news. Ryland, on the other hand, had other plans. He drove her straight to his place and demanded that she rest.

Caroline wanted to argue, but the last week had been intense. There had barely been a second for her to catch her breath. She didn’t think she could sleep a wink, but after a long shower, she laid down in Ryland’s bed.

Sleep came easily, and she slept surrounded by Ryland’s scent, loved and safe.

When she woke, she realized a soft knock at the door had pulled her from her dreams. Ryland popped his head in and smiled at her. She was sprawled on the bed in nothing but one of his T-shirts.

“Sorry, love. Did I wake you?”

“I slept enough,” she replied, sitting up. “I’m actually surprised I slept so much. I thought I’d be too wired. I can’t believe it’s over. It really didn’t go the way I thought it would.”

Ryland sat on the bed and pulled her into his arms. “Are you sure you don’t want to nap some more? We’ve been all over the world this week. You should be exhausted.”

“I’m fine. Just thinking of my next show.” She grinned teasingly.

“You’re taking a break from recording.”

“Really? You think you can boss me around?”

He chuckled and leaned over her to kiss her. “No, I wouldn’t dream of it.” He licked his lips and blew out a breath. “I need to tell you something.”

“If you’re gonna tell me that you’re a wolf shifter, I already know.”

He chuckled again. “I still feel like shit that you found out the way you did. That’s why I can’t wait any longer. I have to tell you …” He looked deep into her eyes. “You’re my fated mate, Caroline Knight.”

She frowned, but he soon explained what it meant. They were destined for each other. Meant to be. Caroline smiled. “That explains why I felt so strongly about you the second I saw you.”

“Oh?”

“It’s been hard to resist you, Ryland Wolverton. I haven’t exactly done a good job of it either.”

“I did my best to keep away from you. To fight the attraction. But I want you, Caroline. Forever. Mates.”

“Mates,” she laughed. “Any other secrets you want to tell me about?”

He shook his head. “No. I’ve got nothing else,” he assured her with a kiss.

“What’s in your secret room back in your apartment.”

He groaned. “No. I am not telling you that. It would be better if you didn’t know what’s behind that door.”

“Well, I’m gonna find outeventually. You might as well just tell me right now.”

“Oh, you’ll find out, will you?”

“Of course I will. I’m your mate. That means we’re going to be together forever, and if you think that I will live with this kind of mystery in my life, you’re nuts, mister.”

He chuckled. “Fine. I’ll tell you, but you can’t laugh.”

She giggled and shrugged in his arms. “I make no promises. Now I’m scared it’s your puppet collection.”
