“Told you I had some friends who would help me clear out the junk.” I press a kiss to her cheek. “You’re welcome.”

She smiles. “Thank you. This is great.”

“Guys! Let’s go!”

Wade leads them off the bus, and Carly starts instructing them on what needs to go to the dumpster.

“I get it, man. She’s hot. I know I joke around a lot but you’re my best friend. I can see you care about this girl. At some point, you have to tell her about Candy.”

“I will.”

Wade glances over my shoulder. “Today might be the day.”

He nods his head, indicating I should look behind me. I turn and dread fills me. Candy pulls up, getting out of her car. This can’t be happening. Only, it is. Candy walks right over to me, placing her hand on my arm.

“How are you?”

“Are you seriously asking me that?”

Her eyes water with tears. “You know I never meant to hurt you…or anyone.”

I can’t put all the blame on her, although I want to. That would make things a whole hell of a lot easier.

“I know that, and I’m okay. What about you?”

She shrugs. “I didn’t deal with things the best way but I’m doing better. Listen, I’m sorry about how things worked out.”

“Me too. Take care of yourself, okay?”

CARLY

Inever considered myself a jealous person. I can’t even recall a time when I was truly angry with my sister. But seeing her with Robbie, I’m jealous and angry.

Growing up, Candy was the beautiful and outgoing one. I was her little sister. Not Caroline. Not Carly. Candy’s little sister.

Just once, I want my own identity. Want to be my own person and not live in her shadow. Not be compared to her.

Then, I hear Candy sobbing in the bathroom and remind myself Robbie broke her heart. That she had been in so much pain, she tried to take her own life. And I’m angry for an entirely different reason.

“Hey, you okay?” I ask when she emerges.

“I’ll be fine. Just didn’t know Robbie would be here. It was harder seeing him than I thought it would be.”

“It was a volunteer thing,” I reply. “I’m sorry. I didn’t realize you were coming by or I would’ve warned you.”

“Oh, it’s okay. Robbie’s great. I’m glad he’s willing to help you with this place. Just wasn’t expecting it.”

Even though he broke her heart, she sings his praises. She deserves better. Truth is, she’s all I have. She’s always put herself second to take care of me.

And it’s time I take care of her. Whatever this is I’m feeling for Robbie, isn’t worth losing my sister.

ROBBIE

Iwalk into my parents’ house and call out for my mom. I have a box of items from Harbor Haus I thought she might want.

“In here, honey,” she answers from the kitchen. I put the box on the counter and give her a hug.

“What’s this?”
