DANTE

With everything going on, I barely had time to go out to work with the guys on the farm. It was one of my favorite parts of the job. I’d done this all my life, but when I’d overheard my father talking about needing somebody he trusted to handle the business side of things, I couldn’t help but step up.

My brother hated working on the farm. Hell, he hated working anywhere. He’d gotten mixed up with drugs, sex, and gambling a long time ago. Now, he traveled and mostly got into trouble. It did not surprise me when he didn’t come to the funeral when my father died.

My mother sent messages soon after, telling me she needed space. She’d loved my father dearly and couldn’t handle dealing with the people. She asked me to keep it small and put him to rest. We texted daily but hadn’t talked on the phone yet.

Today, I’d risen early and gone out with the guys to work the day with them. While Tim was out with the horses, I mucked the stalls and swept the barns. After that, I helped with some repairs and then went inside to the grooming stalls. My phone rang just as I was finishing cleaning them.

“Hey, darlin’,” I greeted Michelle.

“Hey, I was wondering if you wanted to go to lunch.”

I looked at the time on my phone. Had the day really fallen away that quickly? “Uh…” Covered in farm, I still had a few hours of work to do.

“It’s… I understand. I’ll just catch you another time.” Michelle retreated from the conversation, making me think that something was wrong.

“Is everything okay?” I asked her.

“No, it’s just… maybe I got the wrong idea about us. We hooked up this weekend, and I’m probably being needy. You never promised me anything. I just thought it would be cool to hang out instead of me eating here alone. With me being gone for a few months from everybody, I guess it’s getting to me more than I thought.”

“No, it’s fine. It’s not that I don’t want to hang out with you. It’s quite the opposite, actually. I missed you today after spending the last two days together. It seems weird not to be with you now. I’m just working at the farm and covered in who knows what.”

“Oh, I see. I could bring food to you.” I could hear the hope in her voice, and it was damn adorable.

“That would be nice. Let’s say around 1:30.”

“Okay. I’ll see you soon.”

“You bet.”

Two horses down and I was working on the third one when Tim came walking into the barn with Michelle.

“Hey, darlin’.” I dusted off my hands and walked over to her.

She looked good in some khakis that shaped her thighs and accented her hips, a loose black tank top that gave me a delightful view of her breasts, and tennis shoes. Curly tendrils were pulled back into a ponytail, showcasing her beautiful face. Even casual looked good on her. I leaned down for a kiss and she didn’t leave me waiting. She closed her eyes, and her long and beautifully thick eyelashes rested just beneath her eyes. How’d I get so lucky?

“Hi. Tim was telling me you got dirty today,” Michelle teased.

“I did. Want to help me finish up the next two horses before we eat?” I asked.

“Yes! I’d love to play with the horses.”

“I meant groom, not play.”

“Isn’t it the same?” she asked, looking between Tim and me.

“Not at all,” I corrected. “And you’ll find out why in a moment. Did somebody go shopping?” I asked, looking at her casual clothes.

“Sure did. I only purchased tennis shoes and a few pairs of khakis. I can’t exactly hang out on a farm in a suit.”

I chuckled because those tennis shoes wouldn’t hold up either. I put her in proper boots, and we walked into the grooming pin where Lady was tied up.

“How are we getting her into a bathtub?” Michelle looked around, seeing only a sink.

“We’re not using water. Unless she has some trouble areas, we’re ready. I’ll show you, so stop looking confused.”

Michelle giggled. “I just don’t understand how you clean the horse if you’re not adding water.”
