“We’ll work on a game plan with some other suggestions. That’s a tremendous step in gaining back control, though.” I massaged his shoulders, and he leaned back into me.

“Now, I just need to go confront my brother and beat some sense into him.” Dante’s shoulders tensed back up.

“None of that. Would you like for me to go to make sure that you don’t kill him?” I asked.

“You can, but I’m not sure that you’ll be able to prevent it. If he’s behind all of this, I may need you to post bail for me.”

He joked, but somehow, I knew he meant it. If Jeremy handled all of this, he’d stolen millions from his father and brother.

“Let me grab my purse, then.” Something sparked a thought that I’d been meaning to ask. “I know this question may be hard to answer, but you never told me what happened to your dad. How’d he pass?”

“Someone robbed him in the parking lot of our bank about three months back. My guess was that he was going there to get some cash out. I cancelled all his cards, and they were never used. His wallet was missing, and it seemed like an open and shut case. The footage of the parking lot didn’t show the angle where he was.”

“Was he alone?” I asked.

“Yup.”

“Where’s your mother?” I’d yet to see her, either.

“She’s away, dealing with all of this. Though I’m not sure what to believe. I saw Ms. Wallace earlier today at the store, and she said that my mother canceled their trip and they never went. I don’t know where else she could have gone.”

“That’s odd. I thought you were a mama’s boy. You talked to your mother more than you talked to me, and we hung out every day.”

“I did. Things just got weird a few months ago. She’s probably just as stunned by everything as I am. I know people die, but I didn’t think I’d lose my father this soon. I can’t imagine how she felt. My mother and father loved each other too much to go without one another for too long.”

His voice cracked, and I looked down at him. He sniffed and wiped at his tears. No… I couldn’t handle him crying. I would surely end up doing it, too, while curled up in his lap.

“Come on.” My voice was heavy with emotion. Too much sadness. It was time to get some closure on this money issue so Dante could move on. “Let’s go.”

We drove in silence. Tim called while we were driving because Dante had never dropped off the load he’d picked up for the farm. Dante told him he was in the middle of something and he’d bring it after. We went back to silence while I snuggled up to Dante’s side. I know he was thinking, so I let him without interrupting. It stayed that easy until we pulled up to this small apartment building on the far side of the next town over.

MICHELLE

“Would you like me to sit in the car or come up with you?” I asked when he cut the engine.

“Probably best that you come. I have a lot to say with my fists; not much to say with my mouth.”

I nodded before taking my phone from my purse and putting it into my pocket. My hair went into a low ponytail and I took off my blazer, leaving me in a tank-top and skirt. “I’m ready.”

Dante nodded and exited the truck. He held the door while I scooted out on his side. He reached into the truck and tucked something behind his back. I tried to see, but he positioned me forward. We walked hand in hand to the apartment at the back of the building, facing the woods. Dante pulled out a large keyring I hadn’t seen him use before and unlocked the door.

Opening the door, I gasped and turned my head into Dante’s arm.

“Yo, what the fuck, J?” Dante shouted.

Jeremy was in the middle of two men who were using him fully. One in his mouth and one inside him. There was grunting as they finished up. I peeked to see cum on Jeremy’s face, and the other guy was still fucking him from the back. Neither guy was afraid nor alarmed at our intrusion.

“Y’all will have to wait till we’re done with him,” the guy said, walking toward us.

Dante pulled a gun from his back and pointed it at the man approaching. “I wouldn’t come over here if I were you.”

There was a loud grunt as the man still fucking Jeremy finished, I assumed. Disgusted at what I saw, I kept my eyes away from Jeremy.

“J, what in the fuck is going on here?” Dante shouted at Jeremy.

“Give me a minute to shower before we start,” Jeremy mumbled.

Taking a chance on looking, I saw Jeremy stumble into the bathroom. The men he’d been with dropped money on the table before they got dressed and walked out, avoiding Dante and me the entire time. Dante slammed the door to the apartment and locked the door.
