It’s amazing how one person can chase away the nightmares. I slept soundly, holding Taylor in my arms. I’ve had one serious relationship my entire life. She broke my damn heart. I look over at Taylor, who’s still asleep, and wonder if she’ll do the same. Before I can think about that too much, I get up and head to the kitchen for some breakfast. Mason is there, cooking eggs and sausage.

“Wow. You cook breakfast now,” I tease.

“A man’s gotta eat.”

“What are the chances of you cooking me some of that?”

He laughs. “Cook your own fucking breakfast.”

I chuckle and grab the eggs and sausage from the fridge. “Look at us being domesticated and shit.”

“Don’t push it,” he says with a laugh. “You get settled into one of the apartments out back?”

When I stayed away, I leased a place not far from here. No need in keeping it once I came back home.

I figure now is as good a time as any to bring up the Huntsville trip. He’s in a good mood, and his belly will be full soon. Maybe he won’t knock the shit out of me.

“Yeah, thanks. Listen, I didn’t want to do this in church, but I have some concerns about the Huntsville trip this weekend. I don’t think we should go. It’s not a good idea to leave the clubhouse unattended.”

“I’m not leaving the clubhouse unattended.”

“It’s just that?”

“I hear you, Munsey,” he interrupts. “And I understand, but we’re going to gather intel and blow off some steam. I get the feeling shit is going to get worse, and I want you guys prepared.”

“We need to prepare here, not off partying for a weekend.”

“We need to remember what we’re fighting for. Now, stop questioning my judgment. I know what the fuck I’m doing.”

Remember what we’re fighting for. As if I can forget.

Waking up alone sucks, especially when you fall asleep in someone’s arms. I roll out of the bed and go to the bathroom to wash up and get dressed. When the new clubhouse was built, Mason splurged a bit. Turns out the insurance money was more than enough. He added private bathrooms to each bedroom and doubled the number of rooms to accommodate everyone. Although I know I can’t stay here forever, it feels like home.

“You ready?” I ask Sloan and Davina, joining them and Bishop in the main room.

“Yep.”

“Absolutely.”

They’re helping me pick out some interview clothes, granted I ever get an interview, and submit some in-person job applications. Since Lina was killed, all of the ladies have been great.

Sloan helped me with school. Davina has helped me improve my dart game, though I’m not as good as she is. Allie has taught me how to cook, and Skylar showed me some medical treatment techniques, just in case she or Doc need my assistance sometime. I really enjoy that. I even thought about asking if I could help in the clinic if I don’t have any luck finding a job.

My favorite part, though, is when Allie and Skylar let me babysit their kids. I have two older stepsisters but no younger siblings. We aren’t close. I never had a babysitting job like most young girls. The fact that they trust me with their kids gives me hope that one day I may have some of my own. In the far future, that is.

“I really think you guys need to take someone with you. Just as a precaution,” Bishop says.

“I got my judge under the seat,” Davina replies with a smirk, referring to her gun.

Bishop rolls his eyes, although he’s well aware his sister can handle herself. Sloan also assures him we can take care of ourselves. I understand his trepidation. My mother is out there. I’d honestly be more comfortable with some protection detail.
