Taylor

Owen is not happy to see us. We did wait outside the gates to make sure my mom and stepsisters weren’t here before coming in. I’m not here to see them. Not quite ready for that. But I want to know why they’re here, and he’s the one with answers. I ignore another call from Christian and take a seat across from Owen. Sloan is with me.

“I know why you’re here, and I can’t help you. Talk to Mason.” Sloan gives him a pleading look. “Don’t look at me like that. That shit does not work on me.”

“Come on, Owen, we need to work together, and we know they’re involved.”

“Work together? What the hell do you think I’ve been doing? Now, you two come in here and put everything in jeopardy.”

“We made sure they weren’t here before we came in. We saw them leave.”

Owen sighs. “You’re both smarter than that. Just because they aren’t here doesn’t mean they aren’t surveilling the place. I’ve been careful with the intel I’ve shared, and you showing up out of the blue will raise questions.”

“I’m sorry. It wasn’t my intention to cause trouble.”

He picks up his phone and makes a call, putting the call on speaker. After a few seconds, Mason answers. “Guess who just walked through my fucking door.”

Mason laughs. “I’ve already heard. I was planning on speaking to Taylor about our plan today, but she took off.”

“Sorry, Mason,” I mumble.

“Well, Munsey is pissed with you, but you’re actually right where I want you to be.”

I look over to Sloan, and she’s frowning. We came here so I could ask Owen why my mother and stepsisters are here. Does he know who they’re working for? I suppose I didn’t think this through. Mason knows whatever he knows.

“We’ll leave right now,” Sloan says, standing up. “And we won’t come back.”

“You can leave, Sloan,” Mason replies. “Taylor stays.”

Owen stands up and comes around the desk, giving Sloan a fatherly hug. “Take care of yourself. I’ll see you soon.”

She mouths an apology as he ushers her out the door. I can’t be upset with her for leaving me here. Mason made it clear he wanted me to reach out to my family. I just didn’t know it would be like this.

“Taylor, you’re there because my club kicked you out when you found out we’re plotting to kill your family. You went to Owen for sanctuary, and because you thought he might have a way to contact your mother. That’s the story you tell.”

“Okay. But what do I tell Christian?”

“Tell him whatever you think you need to but don’t blow this. I want The Harvester, and your mother is going to lead us to him. You understand?”

“I understand. I can do this. Just…um…just tell Christian I made a mistake. That I miss my mom and want to be with her.”

He’s quiet for a moment, then he says, “You know he won’t believe that bullshit. He’s going to fight for you. If I tell him the truth, we can control that.”

“No. He’ll put himself in danger for me and I don’t want that. You’ll have to make him believe it. I can’t do what I need to if there’s a chance he’s going to show up here to rescue me.”

Mason reluctantly agrees, and we disconnect. Owen shoves his phone back into his pocket. “You ready for a family reunion?”

Yes, I am, and I’ll make sure it’s one we’ll never forget.

Munsey

I’m kicking myself for not going straight to the Eagles’ clubhouse to get Taylor. It’s been hours. Hours and they haven’t returned. I keep replaying our conversation over and over in my head.

I don’t say shit that I don’t mean.

What the fuck was I thinking? This girl has been by my side through all of my fucked up shit. She pulled me through the storm when I was ready to call it quits. She’s the one who kept me from putting a gun to my head and pulling the damn trigger.
